A good deal of my town, Ralston NE, is an old black walnut tree grove. We have probably thousands of red squirrels and they have to be watched for everytime you drive or ride. One launched from a bush into my front wheel and did one revolution before being expelled and run over by my back wheel. Ruined my morning because I hate killing anything. Most folks think animals are stupid to run out in front of vehicles but I look at it another way. Most animals are less than a year old and just haven't learned enough of all the dangers in their world. We humans think we are so smart but most critters are on their own in just a few months from birth, whereas we are helpless for many years. Who's smarter? Watch out for critters and give them a brake. | ||

I brake for critters myself, and it also ruins my day to kill anything. There are certainly a lot of squirrels and rabbits in the two miles or so that lead out of my neighborhood that keep me vigilant. | ||

Plus some times the little critter is not so little and takes you out of commission for a few weeks... | ||

Last week I was riding the Black Hills, followed by another rider, when (as my friend called it) a "stunt squirrel" who was laying as if dead in the oncoming lane launched himself at my front wheel, but according to the guy following, stopped just short of the tire, then stood still as the engine, floorboards, pipes, went over him. I was sure I'd nailed him with a direct hit. | ||

Up here in Western Washington it is the same... Wildlife everywhere you look. I don't know about Ralston, but here the wildlife is big, even the squirrels. There is one that sits outside my office window that is easily a few pounds. I'm with Electra on this one, I hate to kill anything. I grew up in a hunting family, and it was only a few years ago that I admitted to my father that I never carried bullets in my rifle on our hunting trips. I have, unfortunately, killed three birds (mentioned in another thread), however, I would argue that these birds hit me, rather than me hitting them. Birds are pretty tough because they are fast, and the incident is usually over in a matter of nanoseconds. I brake for all creatures, big and small. From the neighborhood squirrels and chickens to the Black Bear out on the Cascade Highway (yeah, that actually happened). Critters, giv'em a brake  | ||

I too dislike killing any creatures ...except wasps and bees...I'll kill those suckers dead and sleep well. Here in Western PA..the deer are what you have to watch for...They're everywhere...and they do not follow the deer crossing signs at all . Groundhogs also pose a severe threat...My brother totaled his Ninja over a groundhog. The worst accident i have witnessed over an animal was in the Adirondack mountains...it was our first night there and we were headed to camp from dinner...The lead rider was on A Ducati 900SS...I was just behind him on my Ninja 500 when a Black bear came out from nowhere going left to right across the road...The guy on the Ducati never even saw what hit him...or what he hit i suppose. I was instantly sliding down the road on my front tire...and Ducati rider was on his back sliding right in front of me...I can remember thinking ...this is it...I'm about to run over my friends head....as luck would have it...he slid just a foot further than i did. The bear did a summersault and kept on trucking although the game warden did find it dead the next day. Ducati was totaled.Rider had a concussion and a broken wrist but with all the adrenaline in his system he managed to limp /ride the bike back to camp...we were 75 miles from the nearest hospital...with no alternate transportation ...so he had to wait for morning to get medical attention...It really threw a curve in the trip... Moral of this story ...You may not be the one to hit the animal...but you might take out the guy who did if you're not on your game. I always leave 5 seconds or so between riders...And After that ...i'm VERY particular about who is riding behind me. | ||
