Mine is stuck down, sprayed some penetrating oil and smacked it a number of times. It does move side to side. I did try taking it apart but when I got to the plate light the nuts turn inside so I can't get it off. Any tips ? My wife like s having a back rest.

Pretty sure (if memory serves) I had to remove the side rails (grab handles) to remove the tail.

Is the "key-hole" not pressing in anymore, or stuck?

Meaning is the pin actuator moving when you press it in?

my aftermarket seat is thicker, so it binds on the tail when folded down.

another set of hands might help get it unstuck. I feel like I need a third sometimes

When the xt s tail got stuck down, I slathered it generously with some marine grease on the moving parts and made it a three person job. The person who was tasked with trying to loosen it up wiggled the tail using both hands. One person kept the key in the hole and the third person held the bike. It took a couple tries but came loose. Once it is functioning properly, make lubing that thing, and occasionally changing positions part of your regular maintenance routine.

Good luck.

The pin does move.

After you get it loose, use a Q-tip and silver anti-seize grease.

Seems like something is binding up or broken on the key release side, started to take it apart, you need to remove the inner fender and the plate light and the nuts started turning inside the light so I can't get them off. I have to check if the lens comes off.

Beaver tail is back up, some how the locking pin was jammed so I just removed it,now I don't have to use the key to unlock it. Getting that inner Allen head was a pain, Buell sure liked Lock tight.
