A local Big 4 dealer has a 2014 HD Ultra Limited they took in trade on a Can-Am Spyder. I was trying to negotiate a deal on it and asked what they would offer me for my 2008 XB12XT as a trade. They weren't willing to take it in trade at all. They gave me the usual crappy offer for my Royal Star Venture, which I didn't take them up on, so it's not as if they were unwilling to take a trade at all.

Kinda bummed me out.

LOL, I didn't realize there was another revolting development thread in progress...though it's not the same revolting development...

Rwven, can I ask if the dealer that would not take your XT on trade was a former Buell dealer too? Thanks.

Edit: I originally thought you were trying to deal with a H-D dealer but I re-read your post and you stated the Harley was traded in for a Can-Am so I guess they never sold Buells. Sorry.

I have often wondered what I will do with the Buell when the day comes that I want to sell it or trade for a different (non-Buell) bike. I'm sure most dealers that never sold Buells would laugh at me if I tried to trade it in, even though the bike is like new. Of course I knew this when I bought the bike immediately after Buell was shut down. I almost backed down from the deal just for that reason.

Yea not all dealers are willing to take on a Buell for trade. Same can be said about other exotics like Benelli and MV Augusta. Dealers lose money the longer the bike sits unsold, and if they know it is going to be hard to sell, they are less likely to take it in.

The deal fell through anyway, they had to try to jerk me around on the financing. On the way home I stopped by a Harley dealer and bought a brand new leftover 2014 Ultra Limited for $2500.00 under list. No trade, decent financing and the salesman rides a Buell TT...

This dealer, Chesapeake Harley-Davidson, never sold Buells but they seem like a decent dealership. Their building looks a a huge red barn with a big front porch. The porch has about 2 dozen rocking chairs on it and when we pulled up there were 6-8 guys sitting there trading tall riding tales.

I think we will see more rocking chairs at HD dealerships in the coming years.

When I traded my firebolt the dealer was pretty hesitant (traded for a Yamaha cruiser so my gf could ride, but its all good now with the Uly!). Ended up giving me $4,500 in trade. Sold in 4 days. I keep my eye on them in SW Ohio, and they generally go in a week or so from dealers. Hard to tell with private sellers. They are such a sweet deal. I'm a broke grad student, how else am I supposed to find half the bike a Uly is for $6,000!?

". Dealers lose money the longer the bike sits unsold, and if they know it is going to be hard to sell, they are less likely to take it in."

Not all of the understand this apparently... I made an offer of $3400 on an S3T (minus the bags but with the racks) at a Dealer on the Front Range (Colorado). I pointed out the fact that Uly's and XB's were going for that kind of money.

That was last February, the bike was listed for 3995 at the time, they've come off that to $3899 today... If I were that general manager I'd be looking to get rid of that bike, NOW. 5% over original cost, whatever...

They have to borrow money like anyone else to support inventory. At this point anything they get for the bike is a loss but the longer they sit on it the more they lose. One or two experiences like this and it's no wonder dealers may not want to touch our bikes.

Avoid the trouble in the first place. Never do a trade-in on a vehicle, and only show up at a dealership with enough cash in hand to pay what YOU are willing to pay. Makes it much harder for them to play number games with you.

After you have decided on your price, Walk out the door when they say no. I show them the cash when I start to talk. I have had the salesman beat me to the door, when my offer was doable. I almost ran over ones foot when it dawned on me how much of a good deal I offered and the salesman said no. He went for more money and I just went. Trade-ins are a good way to give stuff away.
