I would think that maintaining a long lasting seal between the cylinders and the head would be a very difficult problem.

Heck, it was hard enough to get a rotary valve to seal on the early UJM two strokes (like the Kawasaki F8 bison). And that isn't even "head gasket" sealing levels.
