Hi all. Hopeful new XB12XT ulysses owner here. Looking at a 2008 with 15,000 miles for 5,000 this week. Is that a good deal?

I love the x models but I'm short and the xt really appeals to me. I plan to ride about 80% road and 20% on fire roads or easy going dirt. I figure ill get better handling with solid foot control rather than the x parts.

I know there is a problem with the bearings, how do i tell if that has been fixed or not? Reading through the new owner information i am unsure.

The current owner tells me the stator and voltage regulator went out and were replaced (along with a new battery) in the last few months.

I got burned on my last bike purchase and don't want that to happen again.

If the bike has a 2010 rear wheel. There will be environmental seals on both sides of the hub and the axle will be black in color.

The seal would look something like these:
http://www.amazon.com/2008-2010-Honda-CBR600RR-Mot orcycle-Bearing/dp/B005EIF8AU/ref=sr_1_3?s=automot ive&ie=UTF8&qid=1409583540&sr=1-3&keywords=motorcy cle+wheel+seal

Further with regard to the stator replacement. Ask what primary fluid was used prior to the stator failure and currently.
Conventional Hypoid Gear fluids have been thought to attack the insulation on the stator windings, causing internal shorting and failure.

If it still has the bags on it then that's probably not a bad price, depending on condition. Other differences to the X are the triple trees are different as the X handlebars will turn more. (Smaller turning radius) The X also has stronger wheels for off road use. If you can jack the rear tire up and turn it by hand and listen for any noise from the bearings that will tell you something. If ok then just check them when changing your rear tire. Look for any rust near the seals too.

Thanks for the advice.

Ive tried to sit on an x (with the 07 seat) and could barely touch the ground. I would need to do some suspension adjustment if i went that route. Plus all the x bikes in my area are 30,000+ 06 models. Granted they are selling for 3-4,000. It seems to me thats more trouble than its worth.

Ill look for the wheel replacement to see if its been done.

Also, has anyone had problems with the strength of the xt wheel?

Sounds like a pretty good deal, and it sounds like you're on the right track, looking for a XT to fit your height. An '08 also has the benefit of several upgrades that year, crank, lube system, injection and engine management systems. If you're planning to ride 80% road/ 20% off, you'll probably end up on pavement more than 90% of the time (thats the way it is with me). The small amount I spend off pavement is VERY enjoyable.
