First off I think I caused this, but not sure, prolly just the way it goes. I was getting ready for a ride to amon carter lake when the Uly threw a CEL. Dammnit, so i checked oil, it was a tad low, added oil started back up, got to the end of the dirt road and threw another CEL. Eff it. Take the truck. This was saturday.
Tuesday ride the buelly into Ft. Worth to drop off an aloominium intake manifold i "made" to be welded for the YXR100 im building, and get stuck in traffic two times on the way home. Hot day that day and my fan croaked, dont know if it was the heat or oil or what, regardless it died. SHee i t. SO i rotate the motor. pull the fan, purchase new fan (thanks Al) and purchase a james rocker cover gasket kit and some hylomar. Looking the engine over, the push rod cover is leaking so purchase the push rod base gaskets and o-rings, (thanks Al). Well to replace the push rod gaskets i have to pull the heads, so i purchase the "stock" .40 head gaskets, (thanks al). I Pull the heads, now I have to replace the cylinder base gaskets. Other engines i have worked on the cylinder(s) stayed put; My question is... Can i replace cylinder base gasket with a steel gasket rather than use the fiber type. Will i loose some compression? Will it be noticeable?
Thanks for reading and thanks for any help.
Raymond

I don't know if they make one but Genuine James Gaskets made a rubber coated steel gasket that finally fixed my old 91 Glide. They might make them for the XB as it should be like a sportster.
