Last night, I took big blue out for a quick errand. The battery is pretty weakly already from a clod start. Add to this, the fan just running as I was in the store.

So the bike barely started. I had to poke the button thee for four times to get it to crank all the way over.

Anyways, I head out to home and see that the speedo isn't registering anything. The tach is fine though.
My kuryakin voltmeter indicated fine charging voltage too.

Out of curiosity, I turned the key off while I was rolling and back on to see if they both would do the sweep.

They both did do the sweep and then my speedo came back to being fine.

Weird, eh?

So I guess the low start up voltage offended the speedo somehow?

My Uly does that too. I think its a sign the VSS is on its way out...happens more when hot. I'm going to swap sensors and see if that helps any...

Or maybe just confused the ECM at some critical moment... Never heard of that before.

I was having the same problem last year, almost every time out my speedo would eventually stop working (odometer also stops), I would turn off the bike and it usually came back on but not always. I went over all grounds under seat and faring, cleaned all the paint under the seat grounds, and reran the grounds under the faring, and the problem has not returned in 1600 miles. I was also having the dreaded engine light come on and losing power for a few seconds, that was happening a 1 to 2 times per hour, that has virtually gone away with the ground fixes. By virtually I mean almost completely gone it has happened 2 times in 1600 miles since the fixes. As has been stated before 90% of electrical problems are bad grounds.

Same issues a couple years back.... Take apart the harness behind the guages and inspect every wire.... Had 4 that were NOT ground wires that were broken INSIDE the insulation... No visible damage to the wires, until you bend them slightly and a sharp angle becomes apparent... Just my $0.02

Also, the speedo sensor will give out. I've read that the higher spikes in voltage will kill it. You can pull it out and clean any metal shavings off it, but it will eventually quit working altogether. I replaced mine last year and have not had a problem since. American sportbike sells the speedo sensors.

Jeeze. I hope it's just a weenie battery.
I wasn't thinking that it was an actual failure brewing.
