I changed my oil today and upon dumping the drain pan into a storage container I saw 8 or so 3/16inch long pieces of what look like it was at one time a beige silicone o-ring in the bottom of the drain pan. The drain plug has a black o-ring on it. Thoughts? | ||

They seal the crank case halves with silicone-type stuff instead of a gasket. Does it match the color of yours? Perhaps it's just excess that managed to get pumped back into the tank? | ||

Maybe, but they are perfectly cylindrical pieces, looking very much like an o-ring that got chopped up. Luckily they don't melt from the engine heat and are presumably stopped by the oil filter, but it does make me nervous...as does many things about these bikes. | ||

^ I'd say that's almost definitely what it is. They probably just applied a little excess sealer when they put your engine together which squeezed out inside the crankcase when it was bolted together. The excess sealermeventually got loose and was pumped into the reservoir. All the O-rings and seals in the engine are black and couldn't easily end up in the reservoir anyway. As long as you don't have oil gushing out somewhere, I don't think you have anything to worry about. (Message edited by Hughlysses on July 21, 2014) | ||

The only oil that gushes out is occasionally through the breathers but that has now been vented to the road and is more drip than gush. OK. I won't worry "as much" about it. | ||

The only orangish/tan rings that I know of are in the heads, at the top of the push rod covers and between the cylinder and head for the oil spigots. |
