So I've been having a starting problem as of late. It's been getting worse, to the point where it basically won't start at all anymore. When I hit the starter, I get nothing more than a spinning whine. This is not the same as the normal Buell hesitation. Put in a new battery, no change.

Stator? VR? Starter?

I'm particularly annoyed with this because I've been trying to sell the bike, and now I had to de-list it until I can get this looked at.

The whine is the starter motor free wheeling, the starter clutch is not engaging.

So am I looking at a whole new starter most likely? Can it be rebuilt? I need to get this going ASAP...

First thing is to break out your service manual to help troubleshoot.

Lift your ULY's seat.

Remove the RELAY/Fuse Box cover which also has a diagram inside it which shows what each relay and fuse controls. Exchange your starter relay with the auxiliary relay and then try your starter again. All 4 relays are identical and this will rule out a bad relay causing the problem.

If the relay is OK and the starter is still not engaging then look down at the starter, specifically where the solenoid wire connects with a screw post and nut. If loose then tighten. Use a multimeter to check for voltage there when you press the starter button.

Always rule out the easy stuff before buying new expensive parts.

And to answer your question, yes, the starter can be rebuilt.

It's not the relay. I checked that.
I can't seem to figure out, even with the service manual, where the solenoid wire connects. Any help with that?

Well, the bike is on the trailer. Local independent shop that works on Buells (there are very few) can maybe get it in on Friday. We'll see what happens. This sucks though, as I had someone planning to come out and look at it tonight to possibly buy it...

Time to rethink selling it...a blessing in disguise if you ask me.

I told the guy not to come out. I'm not selling anyone a broken bike - that's not cool at all. I'll re-list it when it's fixed.

Looking for an ST1300 or FJR. Something with more weather protection for distance riding.
