This may have been done before but I can't remember reading about it. My stock horn sounds pretty anemic when I press the horn button. So I ran a heavy gauge wire straight from the hot lead side of the horn and touched it to the positive battery post and the horn becomes ear splitting. This pretty much means the horn is just not getting enough juice to operate it properly and the ground side is adequate.

What's needed is a relay to get the proper juice to the horn. I'll get one and hook it up and report back.

Has anyone already done this with the stock horn?

Interesting find. Kind of makes you wonder if wire gauge is not a big part of the electrical issues on these bikes. Sometimes I think Erik, when given a choice, likes to err on the side of lighter weight. It's just that racer mentality rearing it's wind blown head!

The horns are adjustable. There's a blob of RTV on the back side. There's a set screw under it. You can adjust diaphragm pressure with the screw.

Do it with the bike running so it sees "accurate" voltage.

I'll post a photo of my horn setup tomorrow after I wire everything up. I'm going with two horns also. Using the discarded horn off my son's 07 ULY for the second horn.

Will see if I can adjust per Ratbuell and get a two tone blast.

Both will be outside the fairing on either side of the duck bill fender using those 1/4-20 fender mounting screws by the headlights. Bought a couple of 5 pin relays and may only need to use the one to hook up both horns. Certainly would be easier that way. I'll experiment and see if there is a difference in horn loudness if one or both horns are on the same relay. If no difference than one relay it will be.

Bought a couple of 5 pin relays...

Make sure those relays are dual 87 blades, if so you need only 1 relay with an output from each 87 to each horn. If your relays have an 87 and an 87a it'll only work with your horn leads split at the one 87 blade. The 87 flows current upon activation of the coil (horn button pushed), the 87a circuit is normally closed otherwise.

In other words your horn will blast as soon as you hook the relay up to the power source!

I have my Fiamms hooked up through a relay, the stock horn connectors plug right on to activate the coil and the power comes fused directly form the battery.

Hooked both horns to one 5 blade relay. I used both 87 blades and both must be normally open because both horns only work when the horn button is pressed. Nice and loud. Isn't blowing a 15 amp fuse that I happened to have in my electronics kit.

Nice and loud. Recommended to cure the weak horn blues. I'll upload photos later today when I have the time.

My 06 ULY with two stock horns mounted using two of the duck bill screws. Starting to look like it has a face.

I used the original and installed another after market one too. The two tones work well.

Glenn,
Nice job. Before this I pretty much didn't have a horn. Feel like I can get someone's attention now.

Electraglider,

How did you mount your driving lamps? Mounting the horns as I did eliminated that location as an option.

Thanks,

Doh! and the turn signals are mounted on vertical brackets. See it now.
