well....i guess it was bound to happen sooner or later. I bought the bike at the beginning of march and have already clocked 4k miles on her...without so much as a cough...until now.

On my way home from work she just quit running. backfired twice then quit. turns over fine but doesn't even try to fire. I'm going to have it towed to my shop so i can work on it...Any ideas on what to look for or places to start would be awesome. I have a trip planned for the weekend ...was going to leave thursday so i have a little time to save the trip......any ideas what i should look for?

It could just be my imagination but the fuel pump doesn't seem as loud as normal when turning the key on...i can still hear it....just quieter.

Next check the ecm for cracks at the base of the connector plugs. Third, pull the plug wires and check for spark.

Also put cam position sensor on the list of things to diagnose. Easy if you have an oscilloscope (you can tap into the leads still connected to the ECM). A 5 minute check.

Chafing in the fuel pump wires? Blown fuel pump fuse?

I'm guessing you already checked each fuse and relay?

My cracked ECM left me stranded once, and for some reason pulling all the relays or the neg battery cable for a few minutes would enable it to start.

Worth a shot.

Put some fuel in the airbox and see if it tries to fire. At least then you'll know if the fuel pump is a good place to start.

Also check for a broken / frayed wire coming from the ECM connectors. Sounds like something has cut your spark completely which doesn't sound like the typical ECM failure. I'd see if the plugs are getting spark as someone else suggested.

Ok...now we're getting somewhere. After finally getting the bike to my shop....I hooked it up to my computer using digital technician.
Both sides of the coil checked out good as did the fuel pump and injectors....so I checked for spark the old school way....bike has good spark...so I dumped a little gas in the throttle body and she fired up instantly.

The fuel pump sounds like it's cycling....but no where near as loud as normal....I'm kinda stumped as to what to look for next....any ideas? Should I be removing the pump and looking for frayed wires? Also.....which fuse controls the fuel pump on an 06? Can't find one labeled as such

Thanks in advance for the help guys...I'd really like to be riding this weekend

Yes, assuming the fuses and relays are OK, I'd take the pump out and see if there is anything obvious going on with it such as frayed wires. There is an automotive equivalent you can buy from any automotive parts store to get you going if you need to rush the replacement for your upcoming trip.

I imagine the links from Kaikoura answer your question. If I remember correctly, it isn't the complete assembly, so read some threads from others who have done it before if you need to replace it. If money isn't a concern, you might be able to get American Sport Bike to overnight a complete assembly to you for a drop-in replacement.

i have seen bad gas shut a newer road king down in an instant....From the moment this happened i have said the pump sounds much quieter than normal...i'm almost certain this is the culprit...I'm going up to the shop to tear it apart now...i'll post my findings

Again...thanks to all who have tried to help here....Much appreciated.

My fuel pump tested fine with ECM spy and still had chafed wires for the low fuel light, so I ran out of gas.

Pulled the pump, fixed the wires and was back on the road.

When you prepare to pull the pump get a filter, pick up screen, the large mounting O rings, banjo fitting washers.

You don't need to remove the swing arm to do this, unbolt the rear shock bottom bolt, jack the bike up, and it will kind of unscrew from it's mounting hole.

On re-installation use some vasoline or other lube on the big O rings, the hole is tight and sharp, if not lubricated it can cut the new O rings.

I cut the ends off from my internal FP wires covering the entire wire with heat shrink, then I re routed them so that they no longer have to be bent over that sharp edge. Phillips Electronics makes the original type replacement wire ends.

I got the old pump out and was surprised to find my wiring in perfect condition.I will be getting a new pump in the morning....
I'm really...really hoping this is the problem. I say this because I'm skeptical....only because the pump still seems to run...although it's not half as loud as normal....the pump checked ok with digital tech....so...with no chafed wires???? Do the pumps just go bad? At 13k miles? Is there anything else that could be causing my engine not to be getting fuel?
When I poured a little gas in the throttle body she started right up and idled perfect.

I don't know... if a new pump for $100 fixed it I'll be really happy.. but if a new pump for $100 gives the same results....not so happy

Thoughts anyone?

Can you check the pressure the pump is operating at? It may be pumping, but if it is not putting out enough pressure then your bike won't run.

i really dont have any way to check the pressure....i'm almost positive that it is pumping but not at pressure...mainly because its about half as loud as it usually is
