09 XT, I change O&F yesterday..Buell oil filter and since I don't have a wrench to fit I snugged it up tight like I would on a car..
today it looks like some seepage down to the muffler and the level was down.
took off the chin fairing and it was a little looser than when I installed but I couldn't see any real leak.. maybe it was spill over from when taking off the old filter, dunno..
but when warm it spun on another 3/4 turn at least.
my question is, }can the filter be put on too tight?

Check for the OF "O" ring still stuck to the block. More common than you think.

This from a 6yr Jiffy Lube Bay Tech.

Definitely check to make sure old oil filter seal isn't still stuck to block, but oil almost always drips in that area when taking old filter off. You may just be seeing spillage from removal of old filter.

Paint dots.

I use TouchUp paint on every critical fastener when I torque it, and that includes drain plugs and filters. A simple line on the filter that extends onto the case, and you can see at a glance if its moved at all.

And before I dot them...I hose the area with brakleen so it starts clean and dry.

Great idea, I'll try that.
so I brought the level up to the middle of dip stick and that required 3 qts.. book says 2.5.
comments? this was done hot.

do you really need new gaskets every time you open the 2 inspection covers? the oil level is below them so wouldn't it take a lot of splashing to leak thru?
I tightened the primary chain slightly (20k) might like to go back in and check/adjust it again and don't have new gasket.

The gaskets are good for at least a couple of uses, maybe more.

You have too much oil in it. When doing an oil change put some oil in the new filter and install it. Put the rest of the 2.5 quarts in the tank. Go take a 20 minute ride and come home. Let bike idle on level surface. Make sure your kickstand is in the locked position! Remove the dipstick while running and wipe it off. Shut off the engine and take a reading. This is the most accurate way to take a reading. If it doesn't show full don't add any oil. Whatever the reading is, is what is right for your bike. Most of the time it's at the second XX. That is now your full line. If you add oil it will likely end up in your air box.

As far as the gaskets, I cleaned mine and put some o-ring lubricant/sealer on them. Dow Corning 111. This keeps them in good shape and they don't leak. I still have my original gaskets on my 06.
