I haven't seen this here before but I just started to notice this yesterday. It seemed like the effort on the front brake lever was a little heavier than normal. After paying more attention I realized that the lever was not moving smoothly, more like a chatter when pulling it in. The lever seems to move okay when taking up the free play, but then the plunger seems to shudder the rest of the way in. Haven't gotten any further into it yet, going to pull the lever off and try pushing on the plunger directly but wanted to know if anyone had this experience? About 2K miles ago did a flush and refill with fresh DOT4 and it was fine up until now, shouldn't be the fluid.

Not as serious as I thought. Removed the lever, cleaned the pivot pin, polished the contact area, lubed and reinstalled. Now it's smooth as silk. Hard to believe there's such a difference when it didn't even look bad.

Good info. I wouldn't have thought of the pivot pin or plunger contact causing that problem.

Your clutch lever will do the same. I put a couple of drops of motor oil on the clutch cable ferrel in the clutch lever, to keep it working smoothly and to keep from breaking the cable at the end.

It is good practice to remove both levers once in a while, clean the oil/ grease off and re-lube them. The reason is because they get "road dirt" in the oil/ grease which then starts to "grind" away the metal parts. It is part of the reason the levers wear out over time. It also goes for things like chains and the like. In other words basic bike maintenance and saves money.

I think part of the reason is that I don't have a garage. Do have a carport and a fabric cover so the bike is not completely exposed but still feels the temps and humidity. This was a bad winter for cold and snow, probably helped dry out the lube and promote corrosion. Yeah, I lube the cables at service time but didn't even consider the other movable parts that don't have cables. Will have to review service practices.
