OK, started to go for a ride on my 07 xb12x the other day and the bike stumbled badly like a bucking bronco. CEL went on, off, on, off. Wasn't far from home so limped it back carefully.

Made a diagnostic jumper and pulled two codes, 21 and 53. CRAP!

Code 21, interactive muffler control, I ran the diagnostic and the actuator worked only sometimes. So I cleaned off both the grounds connections on the left side of the bike. Worked a little better. I then disconnected the cable and it worked better, so I lubed the cable and tried again. Back to working not much better. I guess I am in the market for a new muffler control.

Code 53, ECM failure - ROM failure. EXPLATIVE!!!! I did and ECM move about a month ago when I got the bike. The only noticeable scarring is on the black connector. EXPLATIVE!!!! I do not see any other damage upon inspection when I did the move. I have re-inspected the ECM and the wires outside of the loom and see no fraying. EXPLATIVE!!!!

So my questions to the brilliant minds here are:

Is there anything else I can do for the muffler control or ECM to find and correct the problem without just replacement of either part?

Could the bad ECM be causing the muffler control issue, in other words, what is the best order of replacement?

Are there any other recommendations you might have?

Does anyone have a muffler control or 07 ECM they want to part with if I can not fix the issue without replacement?

Mahalo in advance to any help, advice, insights and good cocktail recipes to get through this.

I used crimp on fishing sinkers and pulled the muffler control valve open on my 06. It ran great that way. I'm not sure if that advise will help, but it is a cheap fix.

With a code 53 the ECM PCB solder joints are probably cracked.

Get a cable, TunerPro or ECM-SPY and a laptop/ netbook. Other wise all is guess work. You may as well as you will need it in the future for the TPS resets anyway.

Fear NOT though BIG-I as all can be fixed if it is gone through in the right way. This site has Guys with vast practical experience with these bikes that, combined, CANNOT be matched by HD. The only big cost may be a new ECM but it is well to have a new one to hand even if the old one is ok.

I had the code 53 years ago. I unplugged the two ecm plugs, put one full twist in them in the "unwinding the harness" direction, plugged them back in. I found two wires had rubbed through into each other about two inches from the plug. Separation and a wrap of tape fixed that.

For a temporary fix the muffler active cable can be closed, held open or partially open until you can sort it out. It will likely leave you with a warning light though.

UPDATE

Pulled the ECM off the bike and upon complete visual inspection here is what I found:





Oh well, looks like it was that way long before I got the bike. So I made a few calls and figure I need a new ECM. I can get a stocker or an EBR. The stocker is not programmed and is more expensive than the programmed EBR one. Still need to get ECM SPY and a cable and do a TPS reset. Talking $400 for all with shipping.

Going to wait on the exhaust actuator though. I pulled it apart and the gears are fine, so maybe the it will function fine with the new ECM.

I was talking with my wife about all this and joked with her about just putting some silicone around the cracks and, god bless her, she said "It has been raining a lot here and it first started to give you trouble after we road through rain shower. Why don't you just put it in rice to see if it drys out?"

Gives me a few days to research stuff and costs me only a cup or two of rice. Worth a try right?

Will let you know what happens. Oh and here is a picture of this morning "shop assistant".

Put it on the dash of your car truck etc that will bake it out pretty well.
Then seal it back up

Have you relocated your ECM? If its in the stock configuration and unprotected even if you fix it, it will happen again.

If the seat is contacting (pressing down on) the connector, it can cause very small cracks where the connector and ECM body meet. This can cause internal damage, even tho it doesn't look bad on the outside.
