I have just replaced the primary oil at 10600 miles and the engine oil/ filter at 3k. The bike seems to like this. I know this can be "in the head" but the engine seems smoother and the clutch is MUCH smoother. Very slick and almost like a hydraulic one now with ONE finger use with ease. The primary was also VERY over filled which may have had something to do with my problem of getting it into neutral sometimes. Some swarf on the plug magnet none on the engine one.

I also did my normal 5k front brake fluid flush as well. This makes, but I have little idea why, for a brake with better initial "bit" and better feel/ control. It seems to work and cheap/ easy.

I did my "head", PCV and wiring checks and all seems fine. Wheel bearings next with the new tire.

So all cheap and easy enough to do and the bike seems to work all the better for it.

I'm thinking all this bike needs is a little preventive maintenance love...you read so much BS on the internet about these bikes...but if treated right...they do just fine. The only way i MIGHT part with mine is If EBR puts out the AX

You guys never saw/read the Stephen King movie/novel "Christine"????

Just a little attention..., a little platonic attention. Pays huge dividends.

I've never left the primary fluid in longer than 5k miles.
Usually change it same time as engine oil, between 2500 and 3000 miles.

Never have had a problem finding neutral.

"I'm thinking all this bike needs is a little preventive maintenance". I think so as well. And it is only little things as well like checking that wires/ cables are not rubbing through on other parts of the bike. Easy to do and free. You should do it on all bikes but it is a MUST on the Buells as it will save money, time and grief in the long run.

"I've never left the primary fluid in longer than 5k miles". I do as well but this time it took longer than usual. It is hard to buy the stuff "off the shelf" here as we have no local HD dealers so, for future changes, I bought 3 quarts by post. I do it with engine oil and filters as well. Job done.

"Never have had a problem finding neutral". On the road it is fine but it sometimes happens parking up at home. The rear wheel sits on a gravel patch, I can only park up in one spot to use the ground anchor, and can effect it getting neutral. If I kill the engine it goes in no problem.
No big deal though.

Uly man, you don't agree that the gearbox oil needs changing more often than every 10K then? I have been told it needs doing every 2.5K

I change my primary every other oil change.....oil at 3,000, oil and primary at 6,000. Inhale a beer when needed and shot of mountain spring water when I can.

It really shifts smooth and nice with fresh juice. None of my Buell transmissions broke in until about 8,000 miles.

Factory quoted change intervals for the new fully synthetic primary fluid (formula plus) are 10k miles. The older non synthetic (sport-trans) was 5k I believe.

The Formula + is good stuff.

I do Syn3, 5k intervals, both holes, all my Buells. Easy to remember, easy to track, and a great chance to check adjustments (primary, clutch, clutch cable). I also do a more in-depth "critical fastener" check at this time. ALL my criticals have a paint dot on them as soon as I torque them, for a quick pre-flight visual check (axle nuts, fork pinch bolts, neck bearing nut and pinch bolt, brake caliper bolts, handlebar clamp bolts, primary cover bolts, drain plugs, oil filter - the stuff you loosen/check on a regular basis), but at service-time, I do a more in-depth check (and re-paint, if I move the bolt to do a service).

As cheap as a couple quarts of oil is...I don't push my change intervals.

Ratbuell I like your idea with the paint dots. My farm tractor has them, I wish I would have thought to apply them to the Uly. I will probably take it a step further and raid the fingernail polish supply in our main bathroom to color code the fasteners according to their torque settings.

Me it is 2.5k engine oil/ filter and primary at 5k. I just forgot the primary this time. Naughty Me.

The bike likes new fluid changes to keep it sweet and if you, as I did on my first Uly, add up the cost of more changes over a modern bike it works out to be about the same cost anyway.

The "mark/ dot" on main fixings is a great idea with this bike and do it myself. It makes a "visual" check quick and easy and again costs next to nothing.

Uly_man,
Your starting post reminds me of when I was a kid and how new tennis shoes always made me feel I could run faster and jump further. Anyway, the ULY engine always appreciates a complete fluids change.
