I've buttoned up my 2008 Uly rocker boxes after installing new gaskets from the 17036-08 kit.

I ended up re-using the fibre (although they look like plastic) washers on the upper rocker box, as I wasn't sure how the sealing washers that came with the kit work with the allen bolts and their captive washers. (In fact, I initially thought they were extras for some other application, like the breather o-rings and such).

The existing washers looked in good shape and were firmly affixed to the rocker boxes, and were not leaking when in use. I cleaned them but did not remove them from the boxes.

I posted in the knowledge vault thread on XB gaskets:

I'm now feeling a little neurotic about the approach I took, and before I rotate the engine back up, thought I'd put it out there in case there is anecdotal evidence that I'm courting disaster.

I asked about the new washers and I was told by the dealer that you put the new rubber coated flat washer under the existing washer on the allen bolt.

yes, do what swampy said..

The bolts on the top are SEMS style, which means that metal washer is captive. More often than not, the fiber washers cook to the bottom of the steel washer, but sometimes they're more stuck to the rocker covers. Either way, you should shave them away with a razor blade before using the sealing washer.

I appreciate the info. The fiber washers were stuck to the covers and looked in good shape so I ended up re-using them, after an encouraging report from Nillaice in the knowledge vault.
