Had a pint of Bad Weather's Windvane amber/red ale last night at Williams Uptown peanut bar, Minneapolis. Good local beer. Name is appropriate as it is going to snow here again today. Found out the posts saying riding the Uly without warming it up will cause rocker box gaskets to leak are true. Fan dead, do I need it when it's 34 deg(F) out. Looks like rotating the engine is in my near future.

You would be very hard pressed to convince me that not warming the engine up before riding would cause leakage... I warm mine up and they're seeping like crazy.

I think it's just a matter of poor design (I have been told that new seals have been upgraded).

On my '07 I would have a hard time getting the fan to come on at 34 degrees F, so you don't need it. I would venture to say you don't need it for awhile.

I just got back from riding it hard in the hills of Arkansas last weekend. The ambient temps were in the 70's ... my fan only came on a couple of times at shut-down.

I agree with North, I think its the gasket, not warm-up period. Rotating the engine and changing the gasket not too difficult ... just be careful with the wiring, etc when you rotate it down. By the way ... the rocker cover gasket leak on my Uly got progressively worse as I let it go on. If I would have changed the gasket when I noticed it I probably wouln't have had to buy a new fan.

I know several of the younger generation that would not warm motor up and hotrod. Yep, rear cylinder head gasket would blow. They only learn by experience tho.

You do not need to rotate engine to change out the fan.

Ya mean this stuff?

I can't remember which pub I took this but I did find out it's done in the same place as Excelsior beer. Different brewers, same equipment. It was pretty good.

Yup, that's the brewery. I think they share the brewing with one or two others. Lucid is one. I could just replace the fan but wouldn't it just fail if I don't replace the gaskets?

8" of heavy wet snow yesterday but it should be gone in a couple of days. Maybe I should have gotten an "X" instead of an "XT". Does Bridgestone make Blizzak tires for motorcycles? Anyway, I have looked at a post with pictures on rotating the engine on another forum. Does not seem too intimidating. Just follow the steps carefully, stay organized, don't drink too much Bad Weather beer and allow plenty of time. I will be ordering gaskets and a fan from Al today.

No warmup isn't the only cause of leaking gaskets...but it certainly speeds the process. Warm it up properly and you'll see far fewer leaks. If any. I have over 30k on my Uly and only a minor dust-catcher on the rear rocker.

Wow Thad, I didn't realize you were in the same town!
Hate to break it to you, we officially got over 10" yesterday, I'm not amused.

Hey Brad, knew it was at least 8" of snow I was shoveling. I love winter but this one is getting rather long. Now I want to be riding. Rain Saturday to wash salt and sand off roads. 70 deg(f) on Sunday, maybe get a chance to go riding. Ordered gaskets for the rocker box yesterday. If I run into any problems rotating the engine can I contact you for help? Foto, cute dog. Wife wants a sidecar so we can take our dog on trips, Great Pyrennes. Have a 1981 R100RT that needs some work but if I found a cheap sidecar would consider putting them together. Anyone have any sidecar experience? Urals look like fun.

I will gladly help you but I think you might be thinking of the other Brad, I don't have much Buell experience yet. I would like to learn so yea, I'll help you.
I plan to ride a little on Sunday but it might be on my Moto Guzzi, I have a possible deal to trade it for a Miata.. I know, it's a car but I have not found a good deal on a hack yet.
