My 10 bike has always done a little less mpg than the 06 bike did using the same gas on the same rides. Using a higher grade fuel, 97 over 95 RON UK, the 06 bike ran better and did more mpg.

Just for a test I though I would try a tank of 97 in the 10 bike. The results are somewhat disappointing to say the least. The mpg is the same, the engine does not "pick up" IE Go as well and it "sounds" different as well? Filled up with my normal 95 gas and after 15 miles it seems to be back to the way it was before IE Great.

Both times it was done from a near empty tank to brimmed, same air temps, riding style over the same routes. In other words next to nothing exactly the same conditions over a 120 odd miles.

The question is has Buell tuned the 10, or other, bikes to work better on lower grade fuels as
unless something else is going on, with my bike, it did not like the higher grade stuff AT ALL.

The 10 has twice as many O2 sensors to go bad. Did the UK require a cat. converter in the can for 2010 and is the header made from smaller tube?

My 07 Uly gets much worse fuel mileage since I installed the 09 engine. I typically got 47-50 MPG before the swap; mileage since the swap is more like 42-45 MPG. That's the difference in routinely going 170-180 miles before the low fuel light came on and rarely exceeding 150 miles before the low fuel light comes on. Stock ECM in both cases.

Sounds about right Hugh. It was the same with my 06 and 10 bikes. The 06 bikes run lean which is why you must remap or use a fuller with a can and air filter change. The 10 bike has been perfect with the Stealth can I fitted but I think that is because there is enough adjustment in the ECMs maps. Just an opinion though.

The 97 fuel thing was strange though. I was out on the bike today and it is a different machine. I thought it was me as I have been tired but it is not. Before the bike seemed to have lost its "sparkle" and getting it up to the 80 mark was hard work. In fact it was not a nice bike to ride. Now it "zooms" up to 100 with little effort and I am getting the old "Holy crap" you are going WAY to fast Guy. Or in other words just the way I LIKE it.

Funny topic. My '08 Uly gets low to mid-40's whereas my old '99 M2 got 45-50 with the carb. I figured the modern bike, with EFI, open air-box and semi-open exhaust (Drummer) would do better on MPG's or be substantially faster. It isn't and doesn't.

The M2 was faster, got better mileage and on the highway, was a bit smoother. The Uly is nicer for everyday use, but if you can't already tell- I miss my M2. Yeah, it was a bit smaller than the Uly, but not by much.

Never a dull moment on a Buell.

Do you have luggage on the Uly? Pop it off for a week or two, and you may see where those MPG's are going.

I had an M2 and a Uly, the M2 may have had a little more grunt up from 2000 RPM, but my Uly is definitely a faster bike... like an X1.

I miss my M2 also, but I like my Uly better. : )

Last fill up on my 09 was 53 mpg.
2 up with bags for 50 miles
Solo spirited riding with a sprint or 2 up to 100 for the rest of it.

My 06 was 55mpg or so. Synthetic oil in both.

Octane is a combustion prohibitor. Higher octane does not equal better gas mileage. It actually may reduce mileage as it my not be in sync with the fuel mapping. Only use higher octane if the manufacturer recommends it. If you use a lower octane the only thing you may "feel" is a loss of power if the knock sensors tell the ECM to retard timing.

I don't know how it is in the UK but in North America what it says on the pump might not be what you get. Most of our gas is delivered though pipelines. Back in the day they used to put plugs between the different grade fuels. Nowadays they just run one right after the other resulting in a mix in the transition area. I seriously doubt they throw out that mixed gas.

Most of our pumps in the good old USA have a single nozzle. If the previous person pumped a different grade you may get the wrong grade for the first few clicks or so. The hoses are supposed to have a check valve but who knows if it works. Probably does not matter in a car when you are pumping 10+ gallons. In the 3 or so gallons we pump I would think it would make a difference.

For you guys getting over 50mpg is that on pure gas or 10% ethanol?

Do the 08+ bikes have knock sensors?

I don't think any of the XB's did. my 09 XT definitely doesn't

Did not occur to me the bikes don't have a knock sensor. I have an automotive background. So how does the ECM know to adjust timing? Off a set map?

"So how does the ECM know to adjust timing?". The bike has various sensors IE Engine/ air temp, bike speed/ gear/ crank position, etc. It then adjusts the timing to suit the conditions.

Ok, nother question, on 08 + bikes are there 3 or 4 wires to coil? Plug wires not included. At some point , i thought hd had gone to 4 wires to coil and within this technology was a 'knock sensor'. Spark plug resistance was paramount in this system so stock hd plugs had to be used or the knock sensor function would not work. There was a feedback in voltage or something that told ecm knocking was happening and could make changes to timing program. If anyone would know more, please share as inquiring minds wish to know!

"So how does the ECM know to adjust timing?"

It doesn't, really. It's a speed density system. No mass airflow sensor, no knock sensor. It calculates airflow based on throttle position, engine temperature, air temperature, and engine RPM. Not as accurate, but with the pulses in the intake from two big pistons, and the lack of a sufficiently large enough air box to smooth out the air flow, a mass airflow sensor simply won't work. I wonder about a knock sensor though. It could be that the sportster motors are clanky enough (I'm thinking cam gears here) that a sensor wouldn't be able to tell the difference between knock and normal.

the connector has 3 pins. I don't really know why, because I'm pretty sure it still uses the wasted spark scheme like the sportsters did/do.

No. Since Buell went to fuel injection, the wasted spark is outta there. The three wire coil is just two coils in one package.

I think the M2 was the last model with a wasted spark.
