First ride after a long cold winter. Been looking forward to this day for months. Uly did not disappoint! Damn, I love this bike. Planning a trip around Lake Superior in early July. Any suggested stops or tips appreciated.

Did the circle tour on the Uly back in September of 2009.

We did it Counter Clockwise knowing the North shore was a nice finish to the circle

Bring raingear as it's not if, it's when it will rain. (we missed it though)

Watch the map for points, look outs and parks, as there are many scenic places around the lake.

Don't ride at night in general, but never north of Sault St Marie. The moose danger is huge!

Plenty of cool places to tent, but many cool bed/breakfast type places as well.

We could have spent more time in Northern Wisconsin, Apostle Islands, that was cool

You have to make the stop at Aerostitch in Duluth out of principle. I think all circle tour riders do it.

Be sure your GPS has Canadian maps loaded if you have one. Although the route is a no brainer. If your tire is wet, you are too close to the water. If you can't see the lake, you are going the wrong way, or you are in Northern Michigan

Thanks! Areostitch is definitely on the itinerary. Have seen moose during the day in northern MN. Can't imagine one at night. Don't plan on traveling at night but may still mount aux lights and switch low beam to HID.

My friend from Chisholm made the trip last summer and agreed the best part was the north shore of Lake Superior bit.

I always try to set aside some time to spend near Lutsen.

Lunch or dinner outside at Grandma's in canal park overlooking the lift bridge is always a fun time. Watching the ships and boats go thru the canal is always fun. The Walleye sandwich is a tasty treat.

My first ride took me into the woods to try out my new Dunlop 616s. Went through some mud and up some fairly technical single track hills. They are not knobbies but they didn't do too bad.

Broke the belt while landing after jumping 30 some erosion eliminating bumps. The belt had 24,5xx miles on it. Glad it broke while heading back to the gate and only a 10 min ride from home.
after trail ride, broken belt on seat

I took my first ride of the season today and got stopped by a cop in less than 1 mile! That must be a record... I guess I was doing about 70 in the 55. Fortunately the cop was a nice guy and really liked my bike and asked a lot of questions about it. He just checked my license and insurance, told me to slow it down a bit and let me go. Whew!

Toolinround, what is the benefit of the wrap round the exhaust headers?

I think your bike looks great so dirty. Just like a Uly should look.

Hey Turf moor, the exhaust wrap made a huge difference in rider comfort! I'm thinking about removing the heat shield by my leg to see if the heat is dissipated a little better. It is wrapped all the way to the cylinders and seemed to reduce the heat transfer to the frame as well as just the radiant heat off the pipes.

Wish I had another set of wheels with the TKC 80s mounted for trail rides!

You're brave going off road on a Ulysses. The first hint of sand brought me off mine! What year is yours? One of the early ones judging by the engine cover. Mine is an 06.

Turf moor, mine is an 06 (wish I had 08 steering angle). If you are up on the pegs and use body english it has been surprising where you can go. I want to spend some time in the sand and mud to hone my skills. I ride two up about 1/2 the time so I figure I'll be a better rider on the street with my wife on the back if I can handle it in the slippery and un predictable stuff. On that ride I was in a mud hole and dropped the bike while stopped, I appreciated that there is not much to damage on this bike.

Fotoguzzi, that is an awesome video! That could have been used as an advertisement for these bikes.

The trick to riding a Uly in sand and mud is to stand on the pegs. It's not that you really need to lower your center of gravity, it's just that it keeps you from sucking a hole in the seal cover!!

Con_brio,
July 6 to 12 me and a buddy will be riding Hwy 11 in Ontario from Toronto to Rainy River/Baudette MN then turning left around the south side of the Great Lakes. Wave if we pass each other around Thunder Bay!
