My old MZ Baghira "hack bike" had needed a few things doing to it but only minor/ cheap parts. The main thing though is that the engine would stop for no reason. I had concerns since someone had fitted an Iridium plug and a expensive ignition lead which led me to believe it was done in an attempt to solve this issue.

Anyway after checking out the coil it was out of spec on testing on the primary side and dead, in the end, on the secondary side. A new $25 coil fixed it. So, like the Buell, check your systems BEFORE "parting out". It may save you money. AND the bike had been owned by a car/ bike mechanic as well. So what does that tell you?

In the spirit of electronics I had the dealer do a recall on my SUV. When I got it back it would cut out on right hand turns but not left. When I got home I lifted the hood, (bonnet), and found wires hanging from the firewall. There were all these really nice wiring holders but they didn't put the wiring back into them. This wire ran up on the left fender to a black box. I pulled the connector off the box and sure enough one of the pins had gotten shoved back. I was able to grab the wire and push it forward until it clicked into position. I plugged it in and redid the wires on the firewall and problem solved. Motto of the story, if you're having an issue and work was just done, go back and recheck it because 90% of the time, that's where the problem is!

Ulyman, it is possible that the coil failure was an intermittent failure for a while. Those are the kind of things that can drive you crazy in searching. The best thing that can happen is often a complete failure of an electronic part.

Coil failures can be really spooky.
My ironhead's coil made my bike sputter and crap out when it was hot.
Cool it down, measure the windings and they were both in spec.
I gave up and just bought a new one since on that bike, it was just points and they were easy to verify.
Solved the problem in that case.

over 20 hours troubleshooting on on/off switch before switch finally dies on 96 sporster sport. wife mad, i was mad. can't say how many rides were screwed before i finally homed in on what the culprit was. yeah, i troubleshoot before i fix but sometimes it's costly in a relationship. oh, ocd is good to me! yeah, right! i suspected switch but a lot of other things too.

"Ulyman, it is possible that the coil failure was an intermittent failure for a while". I would say that it was a FACT. It is also mounted DIRECTLY, about 10mm, behind the water rad and would have "cooked" over time.

I once had a car that had a "break" inside the cable of a LT wire. What a "PAIN" that was to find. Lotttts of time to find and almost nothing to fix.
