Hi Everyone,
A little history first Last year I bought my first Buell a 96 S1 lightening that I found locally for sale on a front lawn, thought it looked cool and it was cheap so I bought it and really liked it (other then the seat). I started lurking on this site and noticed the love (sometimes hate) affair with the ULY. I started looking and purchased an 06 found on this site. I was riding a Honda VTR 1000 and was growing tired of the riding position, my 50 plus year old shoulders had enough of that.
a Few weeks later I rode 550 miles in one day with no fatigue and just loved it.
I also added a S1 white lightening at the end of the summer.
After getting the ULY I encountered many of the usual grounding problems. I rerouted the wire bundle and moved the wire splices under the hood. I was still having headlights turning off and the momentary while running, engine light comes on and engine cut out for one moment, and the dreaded speedometer stopping from working. Even with all these quirks the bike always road beautifully and it quickly became my favorite all time MC.
So in the offseason I decided to do some maintenance and rerun more of the grounds etc.
I added the volt meter on the dash (work perfectly)
I added heated polygrips (love them)
New brake pads front and rear
Oil change and managed to strip out the oil plug by trying to follow all torque specs. I then helicoiled it and it is better then new. (if anyone needs to helicoil theirs I have a kit for the 1/2" 20 thread plug that I will be happy to lend)
I also noticed that if I tried to wiggle the ecm connectors that they moved a little so I glued them where the connector meets the ecm body (that seemed to work perfectly).
I changed the plugs to the iridium plugs (my plugs came out and in with no issues)
I replaced the plug wires
I changed the air filter to a K & N filter
also cleaned and painted exhaust with POR 15 paint (worked great)
77 connector fix, ecm relocation previously done

NOW FOR MY NEW ISSUE

No more intermittent ground problems, lights light every time, no speedo issues.
no engine light momentary studder (at least yet)
the bike started and idles perfectly revs to 6000 while standing smoothly with no popping at all.
I was very excited to take it out for a spin. When riding it seemed to run smoothly to about 3000 rpm and between 3-4500 rpm it breaks up and does not get up and go.
It seems to get a bit better from 5-6000 RPM. I need my ULY running correctly again

My first thought is that I probably need a TPS reset (if anyone has any tips on that it would be appreciated) I do have spy but have not yet used it and am fairly computer illiterate.
My only other thought would be possible exhaust baffle issue (I don't think so)

Sorry for the long post
any Ideas out there?????

Thanks Jeff

Is the muffler valve wired up?
If not, it could flutter under the spring/exhaust pressure

Or it could be the fuel mapping or something else

TPS reset will cause that kind of running issue.

The only way I can help you with that is if you were here in East Tennessee. Sorry.

Hi Guys
Nillaice it is cabled up but I will recheck the cable to make sure it still is.

Etennuly TPS reset will cause that kind of running issue or it needs a TPS reset to fix that kind of running issue?
as a side note I am possibly planning a trip to Tenn. to ride the smokies in a few weeks. of course if I can get her running properly.

Thanks, Jeff

According to your profile you are not far away. I am in Brooklyn this weekend, give me a buzz if you like, I can stop by and show you around ECMspy.

914-51-BUELL (28355)

I'm not sure if I can help with much troubleshooting, but I can reset the TPS.

Hi Froggy
I would really like to take you up on that offer but I was in Monroe NY today picking up a truck I purchased, so I did not see your offer before now.
I see your phone is a 914 number where are you located.

Thanks for your offer, I hope to catch up with you soon,
Jeff

Nillaice, of course I did : )

Jeff, I currently live in the quiet town of Mahopac, about an hour north of the big city. My offer still stands.

If it has a map like a bunch I have seen, including the stock 06 in shop right now, there is a bad lean area right about there in rear cylinder map. Cell just lower and cell just higher are around 200+ bits of fuel but that area may drop to about 180 for some strange reason.

Hi Jim

Not quite sure what that means other then I may need a better or new map. Is there something I can do in spy if mine turns out to have that problem. I loaded my spy that I got with the bike into my computer today it turns out my program is in German not sure where the former owner got that one from. Anyway now have to figure out how to use it. Froggy I plan to give you a yell once I figure out how to get started.

Once you get ECM Spy working you can look and see what your AFV is and the look at rear map about the 3000-4000 area to see what I mean. Can always send you a starter map if Froggy does not have one.

Jeff, Ecmspy can be changed to English in the options. Click the icon that shows a wrench and gear, from there you can figure out the setting to switch to English.

Thanks Jim appreciate the advice.

Froggy boy English makes it easier for me.

I hope to get a look at the reset later today or worst case monday. I have read to have it warm first prior to the reset. Any other tips?

Thanks, Jeff

Make sure you back the idle adjustment all the way out (so that the throttle plate is completely closed in the throttle body) before hitting that reset button. Once reset, you then set the idle again.

(Easy to forget that step, DAMHIK).

Hi Guys,

Thanks again for all your help. I finally got spy up and running. I was throwing error code 21 muffler issue. I had checked it and it was wired up correctly but it was a bit stuck. I freed it up and it seems to be kind of working not yet sure if it will still throw the code. I will test it again tomorrow. I did reset the tps.
I will report further when I test further.

Thanks, Jeff

The early exhaust valve actuators go bad (plastic gears). They seem to "sort of/intermittantly" work for a while, and then they're bad. $200--ouch! My '07 went out before 10k miles.

I opened up the top of the muffler and eliminated the valve and all of its controls. It as a little time consuming, but it was an inexpensive upgrade.

Thanks again to all who contributed to this thread. Froggy thanks for the Generous offer, I hope we can get together for a ride some day.
Now for the results.
I freed up the exhaust baffle and took apart the module and reassembled it now seems to be working properly.
I finally executed a proper TPS reset (that program can be a bit tricky)
I took it for a short test ride and the wheel pulled right up off the ground and felt great through all RPM ranges. After cleaning all grounds and rerunning many of them as of now no electrical gremlins. I also glued the ECU where the connector appeared to have split from the case it is now sealed and solid. Not sure what actually cured the problems but they no longer seem to be there. I need a longer test ride to be sure.
Thanks to all
Jeff
