Well me and the wife went for a nice ride in Tennessee bout 230 miles , when I had to take a leak and walla the bike would not restart. Not far from home had a friend pick us up.
Got home and charged battery (new battery bout 4 mos ago a nice Yuasa), Cranked the bike up and found the battery getting up to 18 volts (3000rpm), Then I pulled apart the stator and VR connections ohmed out stator leads to ground showed infinity, then between the two leads showed .32 ohms. Cranked the bike up and the stator is putting out 37-42 volts AC (at idle) then as rpms go up so does voltage at 3500-4000 rpm was 85-89 volts AC. I pulled
the stator and it looks good maybe a slightly darker color on the bottom.
I am assuming the stator is bad regardless if it is not grounding out and I did the VR diode test and it is well, however I believe that amount of voltage could have weakened it ?
Can anybody on this forum help me confirm or deny my findings?
I love this bike (1 year owner) and have put about 10000 miles since owning. got it with 14000 miles XB12X 08
Thanks !!

Sound more like a voltage regulator problem than stator problem. Do you have a service manual? Good trouble shooting guide. Mine is a '07 ( 3 phase instead of single phase), so it's different than yours. It sounds like your stator readings might be OK. Did the primary smell bad? I've heard that a bad stator usually smells bad.

Sounds like VR or bad ground to me also. I don't think you hurt your stator.

Yeah, if the stator ohms out ok and puts out more voltage with higher rpm then it sounds okay. There is a separate electrical manual for 08 and up. Basically, the stator puts out 20 to 28 VAC per 1000 rpm. The manual says to check at 2000 rpm and you should read 40 to 56 VAC. The VR, on the other hand, should put out a max of 14.7 VDC. Yours sounds pretty high when you checked it, probably pretty low when riding around which would explain the weak battery.
I agree with everyone else, check the battery/ground connections. The VR has to "read" battery voltage in order to regulate, but sounds like the VR itself.

"I am assuming the stator is bad regardless if it is not grounding out and I did the VR diode test and it is well, however I believe that amount of voltage could have weakened it". And as always "assumption" is the Mother of all that sort of thing.

Your VR is putting out MORE than 15v so it IS TOAST. Your battery may be toast as well now and if you continue to run the bike your ECM may go "BANG" as well. You SHOULD have had a CEL light alarm as well to show the over charge to the battery.

Headlight bulbs wont last long at that rate.

I went with this one:
Complete Mosfet Kit FH020AA
New DIY crimp or solder kit!!!

The CEL will set at less than 6 VDC or more than 20 VDC. Unfortunately over 15 VDC will boil the battery over time and, if the battery goes below 10 VDC, you probably won't be starting the bike again if you shut it off. The range was most likely set so wide to avoid too many nonsense codes.
A lot of people have recommended that Mosfet kit. If you do need a VR, that may be the way to go.
