Anyone that has put the Memphis Shades lowers on and drilled the holes lower to prevent the bracket from rubbing the clutch cable:

How far did you move the holes?

in Dtaylor's post the picture looks like it might be about 3 inches or so.

I just bought a set and am thinking of drilling them in their shrink-wrapped package so I don't scuff them all to hell. any other tips would be welcome, it will be my first time working with acrylic/lexan/whatever these are made out of.

If I recall, I drilled the new holes equal centres from the original holes -- i.e.: I could mount the shade in a middle position if I wanted to. I used the bracket as a guide, dropping it down a position and using a felt marker to mark the next centre.

You will find that a spade drill bit for wood goes through lexan nicely. Don't spin the drill too fast and it won't melt the plastic.

Don't worry -- bug splatter and dirt will soon cover any scuffs made!

Please pardon my ignoramusness but what's the practical purpose of this device? Deflect wind away from your thighs?

The lowers reduce helmet buffeting by redirecting much of the airflow that usually comes up front of the frame and air box. Makes a comfortable difference when cold weather riding, too.

They do sully the Uly's graceful visage a bit, but everything has a price, I suppose. ; )

I have these installed on my 09 and have no pinching of the clutch cable.

Mine are installed with the clamp 1.5 inches from the top of the fork tube. The brackets between the shields and the clamps angle up so the grommets/screws are at the top of the shields.

I expect I screwed around for a couple of hours to get these to fit in a way I was comfortable with. On full left lock, the ears of the clamp that the pinch bolt runs through do touch the clutch cable but there is no pinching. Rubbing my finger on the cable shield, I feel only a slight roughness on the secondary cable shield. On full right lock, the clutch cable swings clear of any interference.

I also have 2 inch risers so the throttle cables run through this area. I positioned one throttle cable above the Memphis Shade clamp and the other below he clamp. The throttle cables are pulled gently towards the Memphis Shade bracket (bracket between clamp and shield) so there is no pinching of the throttle cables either. My throttle cables run in front of (front of bike) the clutch cable and not behind the cable as in Dtaylor's post above. Maybe this helps keep the cable from any pinch point. I also modified the shields for clearance against the headlamp housing. This changed the location of the clamp ears slightly on the inside of the fork tubes and may help with clearance also. I clamped my belt sander to a bench with a very course belt installed and sanded the inside edge of the shield where it fits against the headlamp housing. Maybe as much as ¼ inch. I really don’t recall. This allowed the clamp to rotate slightly which may help with clearance.

To KrabyKarl’s question, the front of the frame on the Uly is angled so it directs the wind over the airbox and directly into your stomach and chest. Try riding at freeway speed and place your hand in the air stream over the air box and you will see what I mean. I’ve made a few mods since buying the bike and this may be the best bang for the buck. Together with the Palmer brackets and windshield it is a very relaxing ride instead of getting beat to death on every highway ride by turbulence.

Sorry for the long post but hope it helps.
