Does anyone have a part number for the low beam head light bulb. Is the bulb generic enough to get anywhere or does the OEM bulb come with the rubber water seal already on it?

The bulb is an H7, available at auto parts places, including Walmart.

Pulling the rubber boot back will reveal the plug on the back of light. Wiggle that off, then carefully pop the retaining bail wire with your fingers or needle nose pliers.

It's tricky, but this can all be done with the light assembly still on the bike so you don't mess up the headlight aim.

Ran by a HD dealership on my lunch break. Turns out the bulb is not a standard H7 bulb. It's a HID bulb that I'll have to take to an parts store to match up.
Anything I should know other that nothing higher than 55 watts?

you can order one from American Sport Bike like i did 2 weeks ago... was at the house in 3-4 days.... you can always swap the high bulb for the low bulb if you need to, same bulb, different reflections.... don't know how soon you need it...

I try to support the site sponsors when I can.... screw Wal-Fart....

I've not had much luck with automotive H7 bulbs. Very short lifespan has been the rule. After three tries I ponied up the extra dollars for a motorcycle bulb and had no problems afterward.

Eventually went the HID route.

Guess I need to American Sport Bike and get a bulb. What do I ask for, a HID H7? I didn't see any indications of part number on the bulb. It's weird cause it has a wire coming from the base, parallel to the glass and make a 90 degree and enters the glass at the top of the bulb glass.

I had problems with auto parts store bulbs until I started using grease on the contacts. This small adjustment has increased the lifespan of the bulbs.

"Anything I should know other that nothing higher than 55 watts?"

There are different temperature ratings (in degrees Kelvin) for HIDs that determine the amount/color of usable light. 4300K is the temp for maximized white light. The light color skews towards the violet spectrum as you increase the temp and towards the reds as you decrease the temp from there. Spring for a good name brand bulb.

There are also 35 watt HID kits out there, so you'll want to make sure yours is indeed a 55 watt bulb (probably is).

If getting the headlight operational is urgent, you should be able to go back to an incandescent H7, provided that the original wiring is not all all snipped up.

Personally, I can't abide the light quality from HIDs run in non-HID reflectors. Lot of it, but too scattered. I tried them, and went back to incandescent.

I plan on making a dual H4 conversion with a set of dual Fat Bob headlights (as seen on ADV rider), but in the meantime I'll be installing Osram 65W bulbs when the snow finally melts.

I'm not sure if an off the shelf HID bulb is your best option, there might be compatibility issues. Also, it may not be the bulb is out, but instead the ballast. If you have both lights as HID, try swapping the wiring around to determine what has failed. For example if your low is out, connect the low beam bulb to the high beam ballast and see if it works. If it does then your bulb is fine, and it is either the ballast or some other wiring issue (fuse?).

If you do have to order anything, I'd just get an entire new ballast and bulb kit from DDM that way you don't have to fuss around with making sure the bulbs and ballasts are compatible or anything else that may go wrong, they are fairly cheap to buy anyway.

Al at American Sport Bike has steered me toward part number 9520. It has the bulb, rubber boot and a new balast. Think that should cover me.

Buewulf, here's the ADV Rider thread that features a Fat Bob headlight assembly on a Uly :

There's also the Simpson Detour conversion (mentioned in a thread somewhere on BadWeb), which requires sending an XB headlight bucket to the UK -- if I didn't already have most of a Fat Bob assembly handy, I'd seriously consider it:

Following photos are on the Simpson Detour web gallery:
