Wow. I bet that bike is incredible. My 990 SMT lives next to my Uly, as well, and the performance of the 'old' KTM motor is, to me, kinda scary. Cannot imagine what that one feels like. |

As much as i like my uly the only one that one day will take it's place (Uly will become an sculpture in the lounge) would be a Triump Tiger Explorer. I cant see my self going back to a chain driven bike. About the Ktm a friend has a SM990 and it really uses up around 1 gallon every 5.000 miles, strange for me. |

The KTM 1190 would me my choice over anything, apart from the Uly, else and deffo over a GS. "I cant see my self going back to a chain driven bike". Me as well if I can help it. Ha, Ha but? I have been running the Ulys for 6 years now and can not recall a time that after working on them I needed more than just a normal washing of my hands. I have a MZ Baghira bike as well now and while it is a great bike every time I touch it I get the old ground in grease/oil in the hands. Mind you the bike is not super clean at the moment either. |

Or is this?
What it is though is a $1700, 2001, 14k mile bike with top quality parts/build (all of which can be changed or retro-fitted), great brakes, simple/cheap to run/fix/insure, last forever, can still overtake at 80 in 5th and handles like a Demon with the right setup/tires/rider. It is not a touring bike though. Oh and if you want a proper "off road" bike all is needed is the right wheels/rubber as this was what it was designed, unlike the Uly, to do in the enduro version. Easy and cheap as well. $22,000 for the KTM? |

I picked mine up today. 15F and snowing so I pussed out and put it in the back of my truck and brought it home. I knew I wanted the A model and dealer I purchased it from (No Deposit, No waiting) has had several 1190's with a R model on the floor for sale. I drove the 200 miles to Omaha and Dillon Brothers Motorsports early this morning. The one I purchased had the Touring package installed. Here's a run down but i will post the photos but i am happy with what was installed and the price. 2014 KTM 1190 Adventure - $16,499 Touring Package- $ 1,632 Insurance - Progressive $ 182 yr Akrapovic 1190 Slip On Exhaust System KTM 1190 Adventure R Heated Rider Seat KTM 1190 Adventure R Heated Passenger Seat KTM 1190 Adventure Touring Cases- Locking KTM 1190 Adventure Black Crash Bars KTM 690 950 990 Tank Bag w/ rain cover No freight or set up fee. No labor billed to install the touring package ( I am sure they made a profit still but its lists @ $3100 + 5.5 hours labor to install). In and out of the shop in 1 hour. I will admit the dealer tech did not know the answers to all the questions I was asking but most I had already read about and was just confirming. I am more than happy. I know some do not like the KTM stuff but I have it in front of me and it will suit my needs. Both the pilot and passenger have a separate buttons to control the heated seats and it has 2 settings. It was cold out and when I started the bike both buttons came on automatically. I had to manually turn them off then. Something to be aware of. Plus when I was riding it around when I got home an "Ice Warning" was flashing on the display.....will have to read the manual on this one. It is true there was snow on the ground and it was ass freezing cold but it stayed on while I let it continue to run in the garage for a while. The seats themselves and very plush. I like the sound of the slip on exhaust. The one bolt hole everyone talks about was not threaded. In the cold the bike idled high for several minutes but I expect that. Also had a battery tender lead was already installed by dealer on it. Bike feels well balanced and does not feel 500#. And if EBR gets the AX up and running I will trade my Wife's Triumph in and get 'Her" an AX. But the bar has been raised and he has to step up. The dealer for the KTM is also an EBR dealer and he had the same concerns hoping the RXs coming will be all its billed as. That's a beautiful machine! I wonder how the seating is for the passenger, I think my lovely bride would have a tough time making the switch from a Roadglide Ultra to that, lol. As it is she doesn't care to be on the back of the Uly for more than a couple of hours. I'm patiently waiting to see the proposed AX before I make my next bike purchase, but that KTM is certainly on my short list. Good luck with it! |

After putting 90K miles on two '06 Ulys, I bought a new 2010 Ducati Multi 1200S. Put 50K miles on two of them (I have this problem of totaling all my bikes at least once). Recently sold the Multi because I just couldn't keep my speed down (among a few other things). Never thought I'd say that, especially at age 66. I hope you have better self-control than I... --Doc PS. Oh yes, congrats on the new bike. Do like the longer maintenance intervals, but don't like the chain... |

Doc.... speed is an issue for me....I am hoping to keep my License and health. As for longer maintenance intervals and chain. It has been years since I had a chain other than my little TW200 bikes that just spray periodically with chain lube and adjust. The wife has a triumph Tiger she traded her sportster in for in September and it only has like 3k miles on it so far and i just lube and pressure wash it. Xdigitalx... I think so, I do youtube some but off my phone. Looking to get a Drift Cam soon. When the weather warms I will post a vid up Cold here today, plowed snow off the drive (2200ft long...sux). The weather is supposed to improve at the end of the week and i hope to get some throttle time. I pulled the bikes out of the garage also today to sweep it out. They sat out for several hours. The KTM, Buell, and Yamaha would not start (15F w/ wind chill...Damn Cold) but the wife's Triumph spun right up. The Triumph Tiger starter seems like it is much lower geared than the others and spins the motor without any problem in very cold temps. Just interesting.....

Ok I have had some miles to compare the 1190 to the Uly The 1190 is just hands down a bad ass machine. Fast and powerful.....and fast. Feels nimble and light. Lots of electronics and rider selectable in puts you can dial up. Mine has heated seats which is sweet on the @ss when its cool out. But....needs 2" risers, grip puppies, bar end weights, taller wider wind screen. has some front end dive when getting on the brakes....which are amazing. The Uly has a better seat, the tall wind screen on my Uly is better, believe it or not the Uly is more comfortable. I am sure I will get the 1190 to that point but right now the Uly has it on comfort. As far as handling I like the 17in front tire on the Uly better than the front tire on the KTM. It really isn't fair to compare the suspension of the KTM to the Uly but the Uly is really no that bad. I like the Uly belt drive better than the chain but the KTM transmission is silky slick. The KTM is an very advanced motorcycle with a high performance engine in it but the Uly I still think is a good motorcycle and hands down the best deal on the market for an Adventure tourer. After a few thousand miles on the KTM I will revisit this

It's good to hear your initial appraisal/compairison, and that your Uly compares favorably in some areas. I feel lucky to have gotten a Uly, because I probably wouldn't have sprung for (price wise) any of its competitors. |

I too feel lucky to own a Uly, it's outstanding for the (used) price I paid.. I like the KTM fine but could never afford a new one so I'll be happy on my Uly next summer. |

My KTM will see the same dirt/gravel my Uly does/did. I hammer down gravels roads and hard pack dirt trails but no serious off road. I bought it for the HP and dependability factor. Even though the Uly has never left me stranded I just don't feel I could jump on it and go 5k miles into remote areas. I rode today for quite a while and took a windy curvy road uop in the Flint Hills on the KTM and then went and rode it on my Uly. As for handling I personally think the Uly has a much better entry and exit in to hard curves. Now the KTM completely owns the distance between as it will just jump up to 120mph in a heart beat and beg for more but the Uly is a very good twisty road Adv bike. Just my opinion.....

"the Uly is a very good twisty road Adv bike". The Uly is just a normal XB with longer/reworked suspension and a few bits. The KTM was designed for what it is and comes from a background of world class "off road" machines. They are good solid well built machines that are hard to beat. Does this one have the "bad fuel" change switch? |

I bought it for the HP and dependability factor From what I have read, KTMs are not known for reliability so I'm hoping you bought it more for the HP... Having said that, I was in the process of deciding between a Ulysses and a KTM 950 Super Enduro when I bought my Uly. Ultimately the Uly won out due to price and availibility...but I wouldn't mind adding a SE to my garage at some point. |

Kag, I worked on the carb on my TW200, and installed a kick starter. It starts at -20*F real temperature on the second kick. (not in a heated garage) I like your bike, but, not the color/graphics. Just me. Good luck. |
