I posted an issue with primary oil getting cooked, then bike just seizing up during a long trip From Pa. to Nova Scotia this summer. Turned out to be a clutch "adjustment"- I was surprised by the simple fix. Bike has run- but now runs rough. - Anyone in the Pittsburgh area that could give me some real time advice on an overhaul ? I am capable, but a mechanic by default. Truth is I can not give up this bike and it needs a proper diagnosis. Local HD in my opinion is losing interest in servicing Buells. I've got a squirrely 2000 S3T that i cant part with either. The statements by others on this forum about the Uly being best bike ever ridden, best handling etc. are all true. I have had it to Montana, Canada, Smokies and all over the east. Gotta keep it- but need the confidence it will get me "there and back again" - Wife has an "06" V-strom that has "0" issues- C'mon what is up with that ! Mileage is around 29K so its time . Anyone nearby ?

Time for what? A tune up? Why would you need an overhaul at this low mileage? You say it runs rough. A lot of minor things can cause that. Look for simple stuff first. Check and read any codes. Inspect the spark plugs. If they show black or wet on one or both it could be really simple stuff. Could be an o2 sensor, cam sensor, throttle plate cleaning, shorted wires, fouled plug, bad plug wire, TPS sensor , or a lot of other small things.

Does the engine smoke? Knock? Piston rattle? Backfire through the intake or exhaust? Loosing a lot of oil?

It ought to make a hundred thousand before a rebuild unless something has gone wrong otherwise.

Intake seals about now, and you need ECM-Spy to see what is going on.

My previous bike was an '05 650 V-Strom... not a single problem in 6 years before I sold it.

I do love my Uly, but am discouraged by the non-stop problems. I have had a reliable, powerful bike for about 3 days in two summers.

I agree with Etennuly though... there is almost certainly something else making your bike run poorly (unless we're talking about nasty sounds like it has internal problems).

Mine ran like crap when I bought it. Seafoam and new plugs helped... it ran alright but lacked power. EBR-ECM helped as well, but still had occasional stalling and surging.

I haven't lost hope that I will find a solution... but I would certainly exhaust all of the easy fixes before cracking the cases!

That is the thing. If you crack the cases and there is nothing wrong there, it is still the same when put back together.

IMHO wiring harness problems are the greatest problem on these machines. But mine is an '06, different set of problems than that of the '08.

Maybe "overhaul was too strong " - I have done the following in two years: muffler off, painted, replaced TPS re-set,New plugs, wires, new front rotor, new brakes, seafoam, new ECM,notched bottom of seat so there is no pressure on ECM, new o2 sensor, cleaned air filters, new belt. But as i mentioned- is anyone in the Pittsburgh,Pa. region who would fancy giving me an opinion ?

Highland hd in somerset used to be pretty good with Buells. Most of the service dept owned Buells too. I haven't been in pa for a few years but when I was they took care of me.

Can you be more specific on how it 'runs rough'? That's too vague a statement to opine on over the internet. Does it idle irregularly? Seem to lack power? Vibrate excessively? Bog on acceleration? When the issue presents itself, does it do so only during certain conditions(when raining, or cold, etc.)?

Give us some specifics, plenty of people here with tons of knowledge willing to point you in the right direction.

Just took it out for a 10 mile loop before the temps. go below zero tomorrow . Bike starts fine, idles ok during warm up. There seems to be more vibration than normal. The windshield rattles like crazy. As you accelerate, the vibration lessens, but not much. Power is good, it does not bog down when you increase throttle. The thing just runs rough. Shifting is not smooth always, even a downshift is hard sometime.- My original post was after the clutch was adjusted in August after it locked up on me The bike ran perfectly in July. Is there anyone in the Pittburgh area that could give an opinion. Probably figured out i am not a mechanic by now. Just lookin for some guidance so i can do the work before spring, thanks.

Sounds like you may need to rebuild the clutch and adjust the primary chain.
