Side stand failure today. I've been waiting for the day. I have an '08 Uly. Does anyone know what the redesigned side stand is supposed to look like? I know the '08 is supposed to have. One bolt broke, the second is bent, and there is a third threaded opening on the kickstand, but there's no sign of a bracket/bolt to screw into it. Is there a bracket I need to buy?

As far as I know, there is no actual improvement in the arrangement.
The older XB stands used to fail at the pivot too. The pivot had been upgraded to that bizarre looking pin in 2008 I think.

My stand failed exactly like you described when the bike was still in warranty.
Now it's starting to wobble again.

It's just a crappy design.
To get the most from it, make sure the plate is flat so that it snugs up tight against the engine.

Shortly after purchasing my 08 Uly from the original owner, I noticed a bit of "looseness" in the side stand. When I first looked at where and how it was mounted, I noticed that there were only 2 bolts holding it in place but three holes for mounting. I soon realized that indeed 3 holes were drilled and tapped in the bottom of the engine case. Did one of the bolts loosen and fall out? I don't know. Anyway, I installed the remaining third bolt and the stand has been doing it's job well ever since.

Maybe drill and tap up to a larger size of grade 8 bolt like I did on my 06 ULY.

I thought the later Ulysses used 3 bolts mounting the bracket to the engine.
But, I can't seem to find a picture of the part.

If the bracket is not bent (which is not likely) then use a flat block and sand paper to dress the bracket and the engine.
It's imperative that the mount surfaces are parallel to each other and that the bolts are torqued to spec.

If the clamping force of the bolts is under spec, failure will result...

The 2007 and prior parts books show bracket L0152.1AA, the 2008 parts book shows bracket L0152.5A8. But the picture in both shows a 2 hole bracket. They normally show the bolt count (CA0015.02A8), but in this case, they don't have the bolt count.

The 2009/2010 parts books shows a 3 hole bracket, with a different part number for the XT (L0152.1AV) vs the X or XP (L0152.4AK). They DO have the bolt count in the 09/10 parts books, and it says the XT has 3 bolts, and the X has 2 bolts. That seems backwards to me, seems that the taller bike with the taller kickstand would want the extra bolt. But I'm just quoting the parts book.

That's what I've got. The third tap is bent slightly forward, and doesn't seem to have any place to connect with. Am I just missing a part of the sidestand? I checked the threads and the pictures you guys posted, but I can't see what I'm missing.

That threaded appendage is probably for a switch, which our bikes did not use.

Is there a nut or a clip on the bottom of the pivot pin?

Appears your bike has some hybrid side stand setup.

My '06 Ulysses received the recall side stand, pin and bracket.
The only part that compares to your photos is the side stand pivot pin.

To repair your bike's side stand, remove the broken and bent bolts. Wouldn't hurt to chase the threads.
Obtain 2 new side stand bracket bolts, or use grade 8 bolts from a hardware store.
Make sure contact pads of engine and bracket are flat.
Install new bolts torque to service manual spec.

Thanks for all the input. Grabbed some grade 8 bolts and threw the side stand back on. It's not completely flush with the mount. I think the stand bent when the bike started to fall. It's close enough for now. I'll definitely keep an eye on those bolts from now on. Now that the stock exhaust is off, I don't really want to put it back on, hah. Maybe its time for a Drummer.

The bolts aren't really what keep the thing on there. It's the friction from the force applied by the bolts.

Also, there is no spoon.

I did upgrade to grade 8 stainless. I'm not going to drill and tap to a larger size though. That's beyond my mechanical aptitude.

Nate, make sure you are really using Grade 8 bolts. Most SS bolts you get at the hardware store are G3 at best.
Unless you got them from a speciality house, I'd be suspicious.

The kickstand (as a whole system) is adequate long as surfaces are flat and the bolts are new and torqued correctly.
There are thousands of XB Buells out there that do not have a problem...

Again, IMO, you can't go wrong with the OEM bolts.
As long as they are torqued to spec.

I believe that most sidestand issues develop from the mounting bolts loosening and not from their breaking off while tight. The proper torque on these bolts should help avoid a lot of issues.
