Can I replace the rummer grips on my XT without replacing or ruining the heating element? I want to retain the heat but my grips are worn. Is there a certain recommended grip to use for this purpose? Thanks.

No, the heating elements are built into the grips. See this recent post by Al Lighton of American Sport Bike for some very useful info: http://www.badweatherbikers.com/cgibin/discus/show .cgi?tpc=290431&post=2363147#POST2363147

He recommends retaining the factory wiring but switching to either an "under the grip" type heating element or the "inside the bars" type heating element. This allows you to use whatever style grip you prefer and it's much less expensive than replacing the factory grips with the heating element built into them.

You might also consider adding grip puppies over your worn grips

I see the set-up American Sport Bike is showing. Is the new heating panel glued on top of the throttle tube on the right and the bar on the left? What about the wire? Won't that interfere with the twist function of the throttle? It looks like it gets routed between the inside flange of the grip and the switch housing. Am I picturing this install correctly? Thanks.

Yes, that's how the panels are applied. Then you install whatever grips you want over them.

Not sure about details of wiring; I'm sure Al would be glad to assist. E-mail or drop him a PM.

I got some polaris heaters and wiring is dead easy, and they work great.

Buy a set of these EVERYONE!!! They are AWESOME!!!

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&vxp= mtr&item=121183385180

These slip right over your factory Uly grips (trim them to length first).

These aren't just for people with worn grips. These enlarge the diameter of the grip a bit (increasing comfort), cushions the hard factory grip a bit, lessens the impact of the vibration a bit, and are a snap to install. I just dunked them in hot tap water to soften and moisten them and muscled them on (I didn't want to use soap to intall them, as the instructions recommend, out of fear that my hands would end up with soap on them whenever it rained or my hands got a little sweaty). Once they're on, they aren't going anywhere. If they begin to drift, just pull them back into position as required.

And no, I'm not selling these, nor do I have any financial interest in them. I am thinking about buying an extra set to have on hand when my first set wears out.

Thanks Ulyful,
I just ordered a set of these with hopes that they will satisfy my needs. I am always a bit leery when I hear about a product that does so much for so little...but what the heck...for 11.99 I'm giving them a try. Thanks again!

There was a set of those on my Uly when I bought it... I didn't like the larger grip diameter, or having one more layer on the grips (see my other thread reply about the proper way to remove a grip : ) ).

I liked the "enduro" grips that Al sells for about that same price.

Of course if you want to keep the factory heated grips, then switching grips isn't an option. And those factory heated grips are more like hard plastic than rubber, which I would hate also, so if you are stuck with those anyway then those grip puppy things might be a decent option. It might be worth trying some of that silicone epoxy rescue tape as well, I don't know how that would turn out, but I would probably try it.

I figure these slip-on covers may or may not do the trick...but they are worth a try. Living in the deep south where the winters are relatively mild, unlike when I resided in NY, heated motorcycle grips are more of a luxury than a necessity. Gosh, I don't much use the heat in my car here during the winter. With that said, since my advancing age has made me more sensitive to things (my wife terms it as becoming a big cry baby), the first time I get cold hands riding this motorcycle you had better believe that American Sport Bike is going to get a call to send me out a set of new heated grips. At the very least I am sincerely thankful to all those who answered my post showing me options where I did not know I had any. Thanks to all for your kind replies.

Even non crybabies will be amazed at how wide a temperature range heated grips are useful, at least if you can properly control them.

I built a thermostat controller that used objective math to decide when to start adding some heat. The grips are always "on", but they only heat when they sense appropriate coldness.

Surprise number one was how warm it could be outside when the math suddenly decided "fire them up".

Surprise number two was how nice it was when they did. Longer and more comfortable rides, and better reflexes for emergencies (muscles are just chemical reactions at the end of the day, and they work faster when warm).
