Anyone here from S.E. Michigan area riding a Uly???

Ive put a couple hundered miles on my new to me 06' and cant quite get used to the feeling that something "aint right"???

The PO had lowered the bike (about 1 inch) and I dont have much info on exactly what he did.

The bike doesnt seem to handle the way I would have expected. Ive got 20 years in the saddle and been thru my share of different bikes so it isnt a novice kinda thing.

She loves to go straight and fast... but leaning into turns, something just feels "off".. I suspect something is afoul with the suspension.. but then again maybe its a Uly thing and in time I will it will grow on me.

Dont get me wrong, I LOVE the bike. Much personality.

I would really like to meet up with another Uly owner to compare bikes (you ride mine, I ride yours kinda thing)

Anyone?

Don't know if it's the same thing or not, but...

My PO lowered my front forks about an inch, but that was it... Bike handled "not great" (which is not a Buell characteristic) and I felt like I was sitting facing down-hill...

I put the fork height back where it was suppose to be (thanks to a bunch of knowledgeable BadWebbers) and all was right in the world...

So, in short... Make sure it wasn't just the front that was lowered...

Beyond that... Froogy and Ulyman will soon be on the scene to help out... Those guys are great!

I think the angle of the triple clamps/fork tubes is steeper than the steering head so there is a little different feeling in cornering from my other bikes where the steering stem and fork tubes follow the exact same angle. ?
I'm new to Buell so could be full of bull.

We have so much adjust ability in the Uly that it is easy to be way off base from one rider to another.

Somewhere (dealership, service manual, owners manual) there is a chart that will start you where you should be for your weight and height, then you tune from there.

Riding a bike properly set up for another sized rider will not necessarily help. When you start at the base you will be amazed at how it will handle. Brands of tires and air pressures make a noticeable difference also.

the first thing I noticed with my Uly's handling was right hand sweepers feel different than left hand sweepers. My conclusion is that the twin cylinders are not centered in the bike's frame. One of the unique features of the XB frame. I assume Erik did it this way so your left foot is an equal distance from center as your right foot. I mean the dude had to build this frame around a sportster motor, not some balanced race motor. It makes for a crazy bike, but still handles beautifully.

base line;

Make sure the pinch bolts for the front axle are in and snug.

Look at the rear shock on the spring end and post up a pic of the piece that keeps the spring from falling off of the end.

Get the owners manual and look up your weight in the chart for adjusting the pre-load and dampening./ Carefully set your starting point. I run softer in the winter than summer.

Two things.

One. Put everything back to standard, inc the fork positions, and set the suspension via the 08 OEM book settings for your weight. NEVER change anything before the tires are up to temp (five to ten miles or so) or by half a turn/click at any one time. Do not adjust the rear pre load past 50% or the front tire pressure more than 36 PSI for the moment. The main things are the tire pressures and the rear pre-load. Tire pressures are a "given" thing but if you over set the rear pre load you will add a stepper angle to the front end making for a more "flighty" or "unsettling" front end feel to the bike. With some "trial and error" you should be able to set the bike up fine. In fact you will, or should, be amazed at how good it is. You WILL find some "dive" on the front end but that can be fixed latter and is a easy/cheap fix.

Two. The 06 bike can feel a bit "strange" on the front end but this may be due to the wheel bearings. You can only feel wear to the bearings with the wheel OFF the bike. I know I had this problem on my 06 bike.

My bike is an 06 and with the original tires (D616) was very sensitive to air pressure-2 lbs made a difference. Getting the suspension set up for my fat arse was really important in tightening up the feel as well.

Hey Bigme007,

S.E. Michigan in the house!

You can ride with me and my new XB in the spring (new-to-me '06 XB12X as well). PM me.

Just bought it over Labor Day Weekend from a guy in Maryland. I had it street legal for only about 3 weeks in September (to get a feel for it, get the title transferred, and get plates). Plan to learn all I can about it and get it set up for 2014 riding over the winter. Already replaced the front motor isolator mount (shot), installed a giant Madstad adjustable windshield, installed Precision Engineering 1" handlebar risers, and I need to find some time to learn how to set the bike's suspension up to suit me.

Currently riding my Road King to finish out the 2013 riding season.
