I am in the process of going thru my still very new to me 06' Uly -

Both front and rear wheels are Black. The PO only owned the bike for about a year and didnt have alot of info.

Im still sorting things out and one of the BIGGER questions is "what are these wheels and have the bearings been replaced"? I am hoping they are the newer style (3 bearing rear).

Is there anyway to ID the newer (2010) wheel from the outside?? Part stamp???

It would be nice to know if they have been replaced at some time (by the original owner).. I cant imagine someone powder coated them.. but you never know

thanks

Take a look at the seal on the bearings, the older style wheel uses size 6006, and it will have 6006 on it, while the 2010 wheel will have an extra dust seal so you won't be able to see the actual bearing specs.

Edit - The size of the 2010 bearings are 6206, but again you won't be able to see that, as all you will see is this seal:

Also, look at your axle, starting with 2010 bikes the axle changed from unfinished silver color to black. The black axle is compatible with the older wheel, so that isn't necessarily proof you have the new wheel.

If it's an 06, which only had the X and not an XT, the wheels should be the same titanium color as the engine. NO '06 Uly had black wheels. Either they were powdercoated...or they are not the reinforced wheels that should be on it.

Don't forget the 2010 axle is anodized black too.
Silver bare metal axle = older wheel setup.

Well no luck on the newer wheel.

I did notice a slight bit of rust on the edge of the belt side bearing. I dont hear any obvious noises, but still not a warm fuzzy feeling.

I dont really know how extensive the "bearing problem" is... but when I mount new shoes (if I settle on some soon) I will be replacing the bearings.

Is there any overwhelming consensus on the best bearing? Are all bearings created equal?

Ive had good luck with the All-Balls brand on other bikes and will go that route unless there is something better (short of replacing the whole rear wheel)... which I may do if I find myself loosing sleep over it
