I have a bad VR on my 09 Uly, 20 volts at idle to the battery, after ordering a new VR, I wondered if my stator was bad. Single phase stator, no ground when I checked each lead, but it shows .9 ohms when I hit the leads for the other test. I've read on here that it should be between .1 and .3, so in your personal opinions, bad and need to be replaced or not? | ||

There are two more simple tests. Everyones favorite is the sniff test. Remove primary inspection cover and smell. If it smells like oil, okay, if it smells like burned wires, not. Second is the test in the manual. Stator will give a variable AC output according to engine speed. Set your meter to AC volts and connect to stator leads (disconnected from VR naturally) and run engine at 2000 RPM. You should have 40 to 56 VAC. Voltage increase is roughly 20 to 30 VAC per 1000 RPM. Good luck. | ||

Meters, especially cheaper ones, are less accurate at low ohm readings... so anything less than 1 ohm is probably just about random unless you have a pretty good meter. Pin to pin (lead to lead), .9 sounds within the realm of reason. Either pin to the engine case (ground) showing .9 ohms? Your stator is shot. |
