Hi all...

well, looks like its my turn.

I have just put my 2008 xb12x for sale on kijiji . Pitty I can't afford 2 bikes : (

But my riding has gotten seriously more and more offroad and so its time to switch to something... more adapted. Notice I didn't say "better".

Sooo afraid that any other bike I get will be boring compared to my Uly.

cheers,
MMcC

Matt, out of curiosity, which bike / bikes are you looking at as a replacement for your Uly?

Well, that's a loaded question, because there's a lot of stuff going on in the background.

the quick answer is an F800GS.

the reasons being:

Been riding a lot offroad, and fear that, although capable of taking table tops, and sand pits, the Uly prefers pavement and fireroads.

also, I have a 2 year old daughter so that means I am no longer riding with my wife on the weekend trips or to go downtown... someone has to watch little Emma. So no longer "need" 1200cc+ to carry both of us plus weekend packing.

Also, there is the fact that I have been performing rather well in the GS challenge however, I have always been "unranked" seeing as I was not on a BMW. Might be fun to be able to participate and BE ranked... and maybe even win.

Then there is the fact that the local BMW head instructor has been given me private lessons (without charge!) because he says that I have some real talent and should be riding for BMW. Might be salesmen talk, but I'm usually a pretty good judge, and I think he genuinely feels this way.

So I figure I'll get an F800GS play around with it offroad for a few years on my own. Not doing anymore long road trip on account of having lost my co-pilote to babysitting duty. So other than that i'll use my bike as my daily 7km commute to work in the city which is nothing. The F800GS should fill this role well.

As for other bikes, sure there are tons of offerings that could fit the bill KLR, Tiger, KTM, tenere, etc... but none of them will allow me to participate and be ranked for the $20k prize of the GS Challenge, nor allow me to grow my relationship with the BMW instructors.

Now the big question is arctic white, or kalamata metallic?

2008 or 2010. It claims to be both.

"Now the big question is arctic white, or kalamata metallic?"

I like Cordoba Blue myself. Good on you, man. I go to Utah every year to ride with my brother. An F800GS was my most recent rental there. It is noticeably more competent in the rough than the Tiger 800XC that I had rented the prior year was. I imagine it could be quite the weapon off-road if properly sprung.

I hope you keep tabs here with your GS Challenge exploits. With two young kids myself and a busy job, all of my racing is done vicariously.

Sorry for the confusion, My bike is a 2008, but I have installed the 2010 comfort kit.

Regarding my last GS Challenge My teamate and I were one of the only 6 teams (out of ~42) to complete all of the trails on day 1. Too bad i wrecked my bearings and couldn't compete on day 2.

My biggest fear is that I'll get bored on a BMW... Its so precise and well tuned.

My dad has one and its never even broken down, where the fun in that?

lol

I owned one many years ago (R1100R) and was a part of the roundel community. Don't worry, odds are it will be very, umm, "fun"!

Sounds to me like you have the skill and that the Uly did very well. Is the mighty GS and BMW scared to rank the lowly Uly on its challenge then and if it was just a "GS challenge" why let other bikes take part? Something just does not "sound right" with that one.

The GS challenge is normally only open to BMWs.

However for some reason the local GS challenge here has let non-BMW brands participate for the last 3 years. However, you are considered "out-of-contest" and not ranked.

And to make sure only a BMW can win, (and that we are evaluating the rider not the ride) the finals are done on F800GS bikes provided by BMW corp. Only the top x finalists get to compete in the final.

So without a BMW bike you cannot qualify for the final, and so cannot win.
