Looks like the same fan "core" to me. I think the motor/fan assembly can actually be removed in which case it may be a simple matter to swap a new "core" in in the event of a failure.

OK, somebody needs to buy an 1190RS (or RX) so we can check this.

"Like many other parts on the bike, the fan has been upgraded several times. From what I've seen in the last few years, failures only occur if a leaky rear rocker gasket is allowed to go too far, which soaks the fan in oil, causing it to get coated in dirt, drag, etc. which eventually causes failure". I would agree with Hugh. This "dirt" will cause the fan extra load and even make it go out of balance which is a sure killer of bearings on anything. It is also not un-common to find other things stuck in the fan IE Plastic bits, leaves, etc.

Dave- that's for the 2008-up single phase alternators? I would also imagine there's some minor wiring to be done to install it?

The question is will somebody be able to purchase directly from them when HD drops the part? Hopefully American Sport Bike or Twin Cycles can order enough volume to justify continued production of the Buell-specific part, or as I suggested previously it should be possible to swap the motor and fan assembly from another fan into the Buell housing.

Interesting info in that link Craig- depending on which fan it is, the flow is either 200 or 280 CFM at 0 pressure drop. That gives us something to work with if an alternate fan ever had to be sourced.

Hugh, I'd just as soon just be able to go to a place like O'reilly's and order just that center motor part and do the swap. Or even if I had to order the complete 130 part it would probably be cheaper than a motorcycle specific application part. They are supposed to be completely sealed so I can't see how oil, dirt, or water could be a factor. Good for 10,000 hours of operation. That is a good amount of time.

Yes they are but like any mechanical device once something else has an effect on them outside there design range they will not last as long as they were designed to do.

Let us put it in a more simple form? This fan works much along the lines of those that work in your computer desktop. Even in the cleanest conditions IE A data center the tips of the fan will pick up dirt and, in time, will kill the fan/bearings. On a bike this fan is working under the MOST extreme conditions of heat/dirt and those conditions vary vastly from bike to bike due to the nature of riding.

Any one who rides bikes or is a mechanical engineer would, or should, know these things.

I've got 40,000 miles on my original fan. One of the first ULY's built back in late 2005. And it isn't a fan spec'd for computer cooling use. From what I understand, failures have occurred because of the wrong grease being used when the ULY fans were built by Spal. Couple that with high heat and I can see how they crapped out.

Without being accused of "The Gripe" just how many miles do you Guys think is fair on a modern bike? While many may think you would like 20k plus the fact of the matter is you will be NOT be able to without the need to spend BIG money on a Jap/EU bike. SOO sad to not get 70k on parts.

But as Mr Cash said "A Sunday morning is coming down"?

Hugh - You are correct on the VR I listed is for the 2008 and up....my bad. Jack has other ones also.

I ordered his 'Crimp & Go" kit that you direct splice into the bikes wiring. I have been having pulsing in the head lights on start up and bulbs going out. I figured if I am going to replace it I should go with a Mosfet

2007 XB12 replacement lifters:

Identical except for the small cup the pushrod rides in, the hole diameter is slightly different. The cups are only held in by a spring clip, so it is easy to pop out the old cups and swap them over to the new lifters. And that is probably better anyway, as the old pushrods have already mated to the old lifter cups anyway. And because it probably doesn't actually matter much what the hole diameter is in the first place.

I switched the cups just for peace of mind. Working great.
