So, check engine light comes on and I pull over to check for physical damage, none. Tried to start it back up just to hear clickity click. Got to push it for a bit to get to a hill, thank god, then started it going down the hill. Got home just as the lights were dimming. Put it on a trickle charger and left it, beer time. Next day went and checked the battery, 16v, when I tried to start, dropped to 2v. Toast. So, new battery, hooked it up and started the bike, no issue. Checked the battery before starting, 16.9v, 21v after starting. I figure VR is shot. Removed the air scoop to find two blue cable connectors holding the plug from the bike to the VR. Disconnecting the plug and pulled on it, pop goes the wires from the connectors. HD here in the area is the only one who ever worked on the bike since I bought it new. No mention on switching out the VR in any service report. SO, new VR will be ordered and I'm thinking about replacing the stator while I'm at it just to save me issues in the near future. Suggestions? Thanks

If you have the service manual then do the test for the stator. The stator must pass all the test or it's bad. You can open the chain adjustment port and take a whiff. You will know it if it's pretty rank in there! If you put a new VR in with a bad stator you will fry the new VR. DAMHIK! If it's good then just get the VR. Might search for options on the VR. The aftermarket ones seem to be better quality.
