For those who don't remember, my 06 had its stator go bad about a month back. I emailed Al and he told me about the new OEM stator issues with the little rivet getting in the way(mentioned in an earlier post here). I thought, hmmmmm, bad stator and now a known issue with the new stators....... there has to be a better way! So I extracted the old stator out of the beast. I was heading up to the Aerostich 30th anniversary Very Boring Ralley 2 weekends ago in Duluth(was supposed to take the Uly but alas - timing). For anyone thinking of going to this ralley held every 5 yrs, you should. Lots of long distance riders from all over the country camping on spirit mountain, plus the National Trials Competition is held at the same time. Very cool, very fun.

Anyways, where was I.......... oh I took the bad stator with me to Duluth and stopped in on my friends at Dennis Kirk in Rush City, MN. This VERY large warehouse of cycle parts was perfect for my mission. With their expertise, we cross referenced multiple stators, measured them, etc. At one time we had 5 different stators out on the counter! The Compufire stators were bigger and beefier and more expensive than the OEM stator. But then we found the Accel #152111 stator that matched up almost perfectly for only $100
I say almost because, all these stators are the same except for the plug. It seems the uly plugs are unique(of course). But if you're willing to cut the wires and solder the old plug onto the new stator, well now your talkin. And that's what I did. Given my other options, I chose modifying the Accel stator instead of messing with the stock stator.
This weekend I got it all put together and it works great. I get better output from the Accel than the OEM stator and it seems better built. The big trick is to insulate the solder joints really well with the right stuff. Remember, these wires are bathed in hot turbulent oil. After soldering the wires carefully I chose to insulate them with JB weld and then shrink wrap. JB weld holds up to oil, gas, and is flexible a little. You have to make sure nothing can come loose in there, everything is cured and solid. I put 200 miles on it now. All good. Time will tell though.
If your like me and not a big fan of the OEM charging stuff, I'd recommend this solution. I also run a different-than-OEM VR on this bike to. Needless to say, I'm solid green on the little LED thingy again. Keeping my fingers crossed!

That sounds like a great alternative, but what`s confusing me, is when I searched it on the web. I know every sites pictures are not always of the actual product, some showed a 3 phase stator. One site showed an encased stator. These variations were all the same part number. Most stated it was a 38amp, and one stated 22amps. Weird huh? I know yours worked and that`s all that matters. I hope it holds up. They also claim it has a lifetime warranty, but they probably won`t honor it because it`s been modified. What VR are you using? Thanks for sharing the info.

Great info... I might try that if I need another stator

Thanks for posting that! Interesting that the Dennis Kirk site doesn't even show that as fitting the Sporty, they show it for a Dyna (and other Harleys).

Let us know how it holds up.

"For anyone thinking of going to this ralley held every 5 yrs, you should. Lots of long distance riders from all over the country camping on spirit mountain, plus the National Trials Competition is held at the same time."

Always wanted to make it to this rally but timing has never been on our side. I cut my teeth skiing at Spirit mountain when I attended college up there, so am very familiar with the area and have always wanted to experience it in the summer.

It's good to note that DK has something in their inventory that would work should I have stator issues when I'm in that part of the country (I hope I didn't just jinx myself!)

"Let us know how it holds up."

Yes please do.

Did you take photos of the project?

Teeps, I thought about photos, but it just would've looked like the OEM stator mounted in there. Once the wires were done up, you couldn't even tell.
But to Motorfish's comment, yes, this will void the warranty. But I figured that if they are willing to put a lifetime warranty on this thing, it's gotta be better than the OEM stator that's only good for a yr. The Accel stator did look and feel like a better stator too. The windings were tight and perfect, unlike the old one.
I know what you mean about the pictures online. It's hard to tell what is what. That's why I stopped in there and looked at them myself. Brought in the old rotor and stator and a set of calipers to compare. We did pull a sporty stator cause that's what cross referenced with it, however the 06 and 07 Ulys were 3 phase, so that wasn't going to work. We figured that out when we took it out of the box. Plus there's a difference between FI engines and non-FI engines. The guys at Dennis kirk had to look at old catalogs, not the internet, to figure it all out. Thus I thought I should share this new info. If you want I can dig up the Dennis Kirk part # when I get home.

Great info, thanks Uly. If you do remember, please post the DK part #. Matching it up in person is the way to go.

The other nice thing about DK is stupid fast shipping, at least here in Ohio. They are my go-to place for all my dirt bike parts. If they have the thing in stock, it will be on my doorstep in a couple days.

Here's the part # at Dennis Kirk; 20-8513.
I looked it up online and that is the exact stator I bought. Still testing it, still working good.

Uly, do you know what Compufire VR you have. The reason I ask is, when looking at their site, I found the VR rated for 32 amps, and single phase only. Your stator out put is 38. I hope this is not a problem. And please don't think trying to cause you trouble.

Too bad messing with it voids the lifetime warranty. That warranty is worth the trouble my itself.

Motorfish, I believe it's the Compufire 55402 VR. It's a 3 phase VR and it's rated to be used with their 40amp stators.

OK I didn`t see that one. Looks like you have a pretty tough charging system. Thanks for all the part #s. I hope it lasts a good long time. Keep us posted please!
