The past few days my bike has been starting rough, with the idle fluctuating for 30 seconds or so. The oil light comes on, and then goes out after about thirty seconds (not the second or two it usually takes). The oil level looks good. I've always had to check the level with the bike on, because the dipstick always comes back clean with the engine off (which I've read about in other threads.)

Has anyone experienced this light thing? In the past four months I've had a rocker cover gasket replaced, a new stator and V/R, and a few TPS resets. It's an '08 with 7000 miles. What's next...

Are you sure it's the oil light and not the "check engine" light?

I would be changing that oil filter right away. Something could have found it's way into the oil system after a gasket repair.

Probably the cheapest thing to check. Cut the filter open looking for debris.

I don't think an 08 would have any issues with the oil pump drive gear ...

Maybe something got into the oil resivior, and is clogging the filter/lines, and actually causing a low pressure condition.

Or

Maybe the oil pressure sensor is going out/the port is plugged with whatever was in the filter, and it's just an indicated low pressure condition.

Either way, it sounds like an oil change is gonna happen. Check the filter first, then the oil # sensor (remove it and drill & tap a capped PVC pipe to check it against air #) then start blowing out the oil lines with an air nozzle. If you've gone that far or found anything you can drop the muffler and remove the drain plug from the crank case

and (this part is at your discretion) flush the engine with gasoline or something thru the crank case breather ports.
If you do flush it; give it plenty of time/air flow to drain and evaporate what ever solvent you use

For the first start after doing all this, pull the spark plugs and spin the engine to prime the oil pump and system

+1. Change the oil filter. Mine did that and it was the filter. Oil change and no more light!

Thanks for all the info. I'm going to start with the oil filter change tonight. I never thought about it, but when H-D did my rocker-cover gasket, I'm pretty sure they refilled the bike with Dino oil. Myself and the previous owner always used synthetic. Could this have a noticeable effect?

Do you think I need to do any flushing before putting synthetic back in?
