Hey all... I recently had some suspension issues with some adjustment that a PO made to my Uly... (Seriously lowered the front forks, and whatnot...) I'm now wondering if it's possible that he stuck an XT shock in the rear... I can't seem to find any info on how to tell the difference between the 2.. I know the XT is shorter than the X... but if I don't know where I'm starting, that's pretty useless info... Thought I would turn to the experience of this wonderful group, as it's alway done me well - You guys Rawk! Any thoughts on how to tell what rear shock is living under my Uly? Thanks. The spring on my '08 X is also silver. I was going to measure the total length of the shock but then realized that with the comfort kit in place, there's no simple way to get this done. I did measure the approximate distance from the bottom of the shock body to the top of the lower retainer plate for the spring. That distance looked to be about 10cm. | ||

Sorry for not elaborating more in my last post as I was in a rush, but the X and XP have a grey colored shock, the XT is black. Since yours is grey you have the stock shock. That said, it is possible the previous owner put a lowering collar in it, look for one of these:  | ||

Well, now we're back to square one <grin> Thanks for the info Agustus.... I suppose I could just ride the thing until it feels right... But there is a certain "comfort" knowing it's how it suppose to be... I'm on of those fellas that love the "factory reset" button... | ||

No we aren't. If your shock is the same color as the one in the pic above, you have the X shock. Another picture of the X shock, taken from a fuel pump thread:  For comparison, here is the clearly darker XT shock:  | ||

Sugarmcguinnmsncom "(Seriously lowered the front forks, and whatnot...)". A very bad idea. This will make the bike handle like crap. Put the forks back the there correct position. Check that the rear pre load adjuster works right and make sure that the rear shock is still good. Adjust the suspension to the 09 book, NOT the 06 book, basic settings. DO NOT adjust the rear pre load to more than 50% and do not adjust the suspension setting more than half a turn at any one time while you are setting up the bike. It is easy to screw it up. Rear is comp on the right under the seat and rebound is on the bottom of the shock. Front is comp on the bottom (USD forks) rebound on the top as is the pre load. The bike has superb suspension and should be great as long as nothing has been messed with or it is broken/faulty. You WILL FIND that the forks dive a bit under front braking but that is a easy fix. Hi Uly Man, All that was done when I got the bike - suspension set to '09 spec...(wondering why you'd think I would use the '06 spec, though? Is that a "thing"). Forks were put back to their appropriate lines (with new retainer rings). It does dive in the front... enough to be annoying... What's the fix? Sugar. | ||

"wondering why you'd think I would use the '06 spec, though?". It is just that even though its the same suspension I found the 06 bikes wrong as a basic start. Just me as I had one. "It does dive in the front... enough to be annoying... What's the fix?". Set up the suspension so that it is, apart from the dive, the way you like it. Add 5 ml of heavy fork oil into each fork. Back off the fork comp 1.5 turns and then run the bike. Then add to the comp, if needed, by half a turn plus at one time until the front feels as it did before but does not dive under braking. I have done this to both my 06 and 10 bikes and it makes the world of diff to the brake dive and the front end handling. It also costs next to nothing. This is on a OEM suspension set up and does NOT ALLOW for someone else messing with the forks before. How well the bike will handle also depends on tire type and pressures. | ||

My 2010 X was lowered using an XT rear shock and front forks lowered about 1". I rode it back to ND from California that way. The original X rear shock was included in the sale so I put the bike back to the X setup. I really haven't noticed much difference in handling, but then I an not a very experienced rider. |
