On an 09 the stator is single phase so that means 2 wires correct? If I am testing the stator the plug coming from the crankcase is male, is that the correct one? I am not sure if the stator is bad or the vr, and the 09 manual is not as helpful as the 03.
Thanks,
DB

Yes, single phase = 2 wires.

There is a separate electrical shop manual for the 09 bikes; do you have that one?

No I don't have the electrical manual.

Of course the only other plug on the VR is two wire also, but that one goes to the battery. Check voltage first, engine off. If 12+ volts then you're on the battery lead, if zero volts then you're on the stator lead. There have been a few recent threads here with all the checks for the 08 and up charging system just in case you don't want to wait for the manual.
Now that I think of it, I was just looking at my old VR and both plugs were male, the leads going to the stator and battery should be female. Hmmm...

That is what I thought. I was on the wrong plug. I'll rub some diagnostics this week. It would be nice if the stator is good and just the VR went. A lot easier to replace. If the stator went I'm considering going to the mosfet VR and a 3 phase stator. Anyone have any reasons not to do the switch?

POS90 thanks for the offer, I'll let you know if I need it. I'm pretty sure I know where I'm at now. Either way at this point it looks like I'll be waiting on Parts.

Delta-

I did a VR and stator replacement JUST LAST WEEK with the kit from Roadstercycle.com. Works great, and is an upgrade from the factory parts. My stator had gone bad, with several of the windings crusty and brown. Jack is great to work with, as well. Recommended.

Portero, That is exactly what I am thinking of doing. Unfortunately Jack is on vacation this week and didn't take any stators with him. I'm surprised he takes anything at all frankly. So He can't ship until This Weekend, which means one more week until I can ride the Uly again.

Call me lazy or mechanically inept, but I figured it to be easier to replace both stator and vr instead of spending all the time trying to diagnose the issue. Plus, its an upgrade. Ever taken the primary apart before? Its not a huge deal, just tedious.

Yeah, that is the way I was leaning, I was going to diagnose out to see if I could run on a new VR and do the stator later to get back on the road sooner, but will probably wait a week and do both.
