What should I be looking for on an 06 Uly with 70k+ miles on it. I've been riding a Blast for 5 years, and have been looking to move up. I'm 6'2", and the Blast has been a really fun bike, but I just feel huge on it.

I have an 2006 July and it's the best motorcycle I've ever ridden or owned which is over 47 years that I've owned a motorcycle.

If you can get use to the looks of the bike, you'llbe ok.

If it has been maintained properly it is probably nearly as good as when it was new.

My '06 now has 60,000 on it and it is doing fine. It had a crap load of problems from 500 to 35,000 miles. Except for a set of rear wheel bearings, and fork seals it has been pretty much problem free since 35,000.

The best thing I can tell you is that the non maintenance repairs that needed fixing have never come back once repaired. It still only uses a half pint of oil in 2500 miles, it still will get 56 mpg wringing it in the twisties.

It has a couple of minor oil seepage areas, but runs along and wheelies as happily as when it was new. They don't seem to loose power with miles. At least mine hasn't yet, and other folks I have spoken to have said the same.

It's very encouraging to hear about Uly's with big miles on them without big problems. I'm ashamed to say mine has only done 20K and I've had it since Feb 2008 but I have owned other bikes, which I use as well. My Uly is now resident in Portugal, where I've taken early retirement and is awaiting registration down here. It is an 06 model which I bought in GB for less than 75 per cent of the retail price. To date it's never broken down but has snapped one belt at 11,900 miles. A rear wheel bearing needed replacing. I have had an airbox mod done. It has the Free Spirit belt tensioner, which I was assured is essential. I also had a grease nipple fitted at the output shaft and it has a K&N filter. I want to get a Drummer exhaust fitted and then start using the damn thing a lot more. I can't see myself ever selling it. Indybuell, buy that bike.

Well, I'll buck the trend: Too many miles on it in my opinion. Continue looking unless the bike is almost free. How much is the seller wanting if you don't mind me asking? If he only wants rat bike money for it, it may be worth it.

I have seen '06s and '07s go for around $4K with half that mileage. Hell, I could probably be persuaded to part with mine for $4K, and I have less than 20K miles. You can do better in my opinion. I don't know what your budget is, but for not much more money, you can find one that could potentially have twice as much life left in it. I'd keep looking.

Personally, I wouldn't be scared off from a high mile bike.
I suggest trying to talk him down in price though.

I fear low mile bikes more really.
The first 20,000 miles on my X1 were hell but it calmed down after thet.
Similarly, my X12X was terrible the first year too.

Three grand is probably fair if the bike look OK and all the maintenance has been done.

I just purchased my 3rd Uly. It was from a badwebber here. I purchased the Uly because it had 60k miles on it.

The first uly I bought was an 06 used in 07 with 8k miles on it. I had issue after issue with that bike. I finally traded it off for an 08 Goldwing.

The second uly I bought was an 09 XT new from the dealer. I put 1500 miles on that one and then started off on an Iron Butt. 575 miles into that IBR, I started hearing something strange in the engine. I stopped to check it out and found that front head and jug was separated from the base. The header had busted away from the head and the nuts had been stripped off. The header going into the muffler was broken at the base and was cracked in a half moon fashion. I managed to spend 4 hours putting all of that back together (i.e. odd bolts, bailing wire and shear luck. I got the bike back to my dealer and had them repair everything. I sold that bike to an inmate here the following week and purchased an Honda ST1300.

After much reading I figure out that the Uly growing pains were from 0 -30k miles or so. This brings me to my most recent uly purchase... it has 60k and I knew the owner. I have watched and read his post on his bike. I trusted him and his work. My bet is to have a uly that has finally passed all of the growing pains and now it's just gas, oil, tire and go...

That's the thing... I'd say a good running Uly is worth $5k to $8k all day long. They are just wonderful bikes.

So I figure if I bought a $3000 uly, rebuilt the motor, replaced the brakes and bearings etc, it would still be a $5000 to $8000 bike. So as long as you enjoy working on it and can absorb the downtime, there isn't much other downside.

Slowride - I'm curious. If you had so many issues with the Uly what kept bringing you back?

I think it is called Stockholm Syndrome.

Most likely the reason Slowride keeps coming back is this damn BadWeB and it's members. He is a great fella to have around a bonfire at a KLR....er....ah.....Buell event!(even when riding a GW)

Indy - I keep coming back to the Uly for several reasons. I really love the soul of the thing. The sportster lump as it is worked over by the elves just speaks to me. I also love the ride of the Uly. I specifically like the X over the XT (i.e. longer travel suspension). It is one of the few bikes I can get on and ride the twisty's like a fool, ride gravel like an idiot and tour on something not seen every day.

This most recent Uly purchase makes 7 Buell's I have owned over the years. My wish list would be in this order (S1, S3, Uly and whatever new EBR touring bike he makes next).

I am motorcyclist - I have owned many, many different bikes and all have served me decently. I currently have a BMW K1200LT, Ulyssess and a soon to arrive KLR. I think I've just decided to keep a Buell in the stable at all times.

Lastly, I really do like the people I have met on Badweb. I belong to several other boards and I have only ever a few riders within the pool of thousands that I can get along with. Contrastingly, on Badweb, I have never really met anyone I don't like. The knowledge base here is extensive and the respect for the individual is second to none.

People like Etennuly and Tootal make it all worth while...

Sounds Awesome. I look forward to taking a bigger part in the BBD board next Sunday after I join the Uly club! It's been five years since I picked up first motorcycle, the Buell Blast, and I'm finally able to pull the trigger on an upgrade. I can't wait!

Well, since a few people asked me to "stay around"...here I am, and here goes...

I put 55,000 miles on one '06, and 37,000 on another '06, so I knew the bike quite well. Even up until recently, in the face of newer competition ('10 Multistrada and '13 GS LC) it still fared quite well in commuter use. Although its "lack of refinement" (a plus to some) was often a bit of an annoyance to me. But a minor one. I was pretty happy with it...

I kept my 2nd '06 until it developed a problem I could not diagnose, then sold it (them) yesterday. Its (no apostrophe, BTW; grammar lesson for free) new buyer will be here on BadWeB, I'm sure. Yesterday was a very sad day for me, to which Mrs. Greg will attest.

The price for which I parted from my two '06s was so low you'd probably find it ridiculous, but my dad always told me that the value of a vehicle was how much you could get for it. The Uly is not much valued in these parts. If my '06 had been running properly, I would probably have held out for around $4,000 (including the S/N 044 parts bike...shown above in happier times).

I was always very impressed with EB's thinking, and as a fellow mechanical engineer it was sad to see BMC killed.

My bottom line: the '06 was a great bike but it seems to have a definite lifetime. Just like us.

Anyway, life goes on, and I'll keep following the Uly travails.

Indybuel, 70k does sound like a lot of miles for any used bike, but if it's what you've settled on, good luck.
