And not ha ha either. On the first crank, the starter sounds like it's slipping, for lack of a better term. It sounds like it's under a load, not grinding or skipping but at a higher pitch. If I let up and try again it cranks normally. I know that's not a great description, but it's the best I can think of. Does the bendix on these starters have a clutch?

What? No replies on this? I may not be much help as I've never had my XT starter apart yet. If they are the same as a car starter, the bendix is actually a one-way sprag clutch that grabs one way and slips if over-driven. On the cars I worked on in an automotive electrical shop, this clutch and gear assy (Bendix) was replaceable separately. Not sure if this part is available for our bikes. Can anyone offer some good advice here?

I think it is, I believe the parts are available to order from your local dealer.

This may sound stupid/out of left field etc' but...How is your battery?
I'm no starter expert but I had been experiencing a somewhat similar condition on my '08XP. Eventually, the battery died, I replaced it & the starter issue disappeared.
It might just be coincidence so YMMV.

that sounds like the starter up against the compression stroke. If you hold the button down does the starter push through and the bike crank? If not, you are looking at a potentially weak battery.

My does the exact same ever since I got it.

I keep my finger on it and eventually it pushes through and starts.

Everytime I start it since 2010.

Also, every 5 to 10 starts, I get a very loud "chunk" sound. It did that 2 years ago for a summer and eventually the pinion gear and channel key broke (don't know if those are related events). Anyhow, since the engine (or just about) it hadn't done it again.... until this month.

Since the bike was new, almost 20K miles ago now, the first crank when cold comes up on compression and stops. This latest reaction is somewhat new, I didn't say before but this slip sounds like a chirp when it happens. Let up and try again and it cranks normally. It's not like it's leaving me stranded but you all know how new noises are.

Matt, I think something similar happens when the bike is hot. Every now and then when I crank the engine, it almost starts but doesn't. Of course my finger's still on the button so the engine overrides the starter then the starter catches up and "clunk".

Hey, eventually somethings gotta happen, right?
