any body ever replace busted throttle cables with the universal ones?
http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/3/13/121/3751 7/ITEM/S-S-Cycle-48-Universal-Replacement-Throttle -Cable.aspx

i am unsure of how the ball on the end is fixed to the cable and don't want it to fall off. are they crap?

here's the backstory
so i go to do a TPS reset and can't get the damned thing to zero. i thought it was the vistacruise that was giving me issues.
pull off the air box to find that both of my throttle cables are shredding.
the open cable is far worse and is broken inside the jacket, thus the friction i was feeling at the grip.
the OEM cables from my 07X measure 42 inches and the jacket 35. i have some blast throttle cables that are too short by about 4 inches.
i think i could re-use the cable jackets if i could replace the actual cables for $5 each. i just don't know about getting the ball on the end of the cable falling off.

if theyll work, it sure beats the HD price for just the 'open' one

I just checked American Sportbike and they are 50 bucks for each cable too. I will say, the new replacement cables have a Teflon coating on the cable that is much better than the originals. Looks like they'd last a lot longer and remain slick for a long time. Might be worth the extra bucks. I replaced both of my cables when I did the triple tree swap. I might still have the originals if you need something cheap until you can afford some new ones.

PM sent

i stopped and every autoparts store on the way home and called every place that's open on sundays trying to find some damned throttle cable.
repeating myself & explaining and getting nothing but stupid looks made me feel like i was trying to milk a bull.
the best thing i got was some advice from the new O'riely store. A guy made his own from bycicle brake cables for his CB750. pretty smart idea.

apparently making throttle cables seems to be a lost art and a thing of the past. ... like cleaning and gapping spark plugs has become.

Close.
But, I can't help but wonder, how long his redneck repair lasted.

i tried my hand at melting on cable ends. but i didnt' use a block of wood. sorry folks.
i used the wrong type of solder only because i had it on hand (it's for welding non-ferrous metals) and had impressive results.
i tugged and yanked on the length of cable cut from the busted one. i succeeded in breaking it by snapping tension on it after at least a dozen times between 2 vice grips
i expect better results after i get some of the right type of solder. i'd trust this stuff to work, but since i know that it's not the reccomended stuff; i'll spend the extra 2 bucks.

the top piece of cable is from the throttle body end and where it failed

i ordered the S&S cables sunday night and in the wait time, i tested a few solders to see which was the strongest.

the 50/50 was about the worst. it deformed in a pair of pliers, and the cable would pull right out of it at what felt like 10 pounds of tension. i tried multiple solderings with and without flux.

the lead-free solder that i had was not much better. it deformed noticeably less but the cable came right out of it, too.

i achieved the best results with the stuff i tried monday.
the Alumaweld is zinc based and flirts with brazing but is technically still a solder. Brazing is defined by a filler metal melting point of over 800°F.
it is intended for non-ferrous metals, but i'm thinking that there is enough chromium in the stainless steel cable for it to bond to. it definetly did not stick to the mild steel forms i made, but the 50/50 did. so well that a few of the 50/50 barrel ends were destroyed trying to remove them.

either way, it deforms minimally in the pliers and 2 alumaweld cable ends could almost support my 200+ LBS. i'd almost get my feet totally unweighted and then the cable would snap just outside of the barrel end. i'm guessing that this is because alumaweld is harder and has almost twice as hot working temperature than solder. 715–730 °F vs 365–419 °F
even if the 50/50 was penetrating better into the cable, it just didn't have the strength to hold the joint.

when i tried to flux the joint; the oxidization removed would put a bunch of crap in the joint and prevent any wicking action in the cable. strength of the joint was significantly reduced, as the cable would pull out of the barrel but it was still stronger than the plumbing solders.

alumaweld vs OEM barrel ends 'tugs of war' showed both to be equally strong, or at least stronger than the cable. the cable would fail just next to the alumaweld end, i'm guessing that the cable was getting over-heated and weakened.

my alumaweld ends vs an OEM barrel end

the OEM cables are .047" and the replacements i ordered were .060" but fit just fine into the jacket.
the bigger cables should be stronger ... right?
everything is assembled and i'll see how long this repair lasts. i put my soldered ends in the grip so that if i want to take a peek so see how they are doing; it's only 2 screws instead of the whole airbox and velocity stack.

update:
throttle action has gotten rougher and rougher the last few months. worse in the morning son initial crack of the throttle, and worse after sitting longer. i should have bought the right size cable from flanders. i'lk hold on to the jackets, put the correct size cable in them and keep em as a spare set for a rainy day.

i parked the bike a few weeks ago cuz i was gonna replace the fan and re-fill the sock pre-load adjuster and the return cable seized up.

for the life of me last night, i couldn't find the ones i got off ebay. i found everything else i bought from the part-out of that 08, but not what i was looking for to replace on my steed. i'm getting tired of riding the wife's
