Those of you familiar with the area of Northern Virginia I live west of Manassas near Gainesville. Today the weather was pretty good so we decided to go for a bit of a ride.

Took 29 South to Warrenton then 211 to and up the mountain range to Skyline, we headed north to Front Royal then skipped east on 55 back home about 130 miles give or take.

Bike ran great, it's probably set up the best it has ever been since I bought it new in '06 and only has 21,500 miles on her.

Here are some pics of one of our stops on Skyline.

Wifey on the lookout.

360 degree panorama.

The Valley west of Skyline

Directly southwest of Front Royal, I go tubing on the river in the valley.

Great riding area. I like Skyline...but prefer the BRP just because of the speed limit change ; )

Beautiful pics. I wish I had time to get out right now. I am about to need a good ride into the mountains.

Thanks for posting it.

Your close by... I am in Martinsburg WV now and took a ride yesterday down 9 over to work in Ashburn. I love the riding up here in the Shenandoah area... The Uly Loves it!

Didn't you just do a ride with your lady up into Canada last year? I think I recognize her and the bike.

Yeah, that was a great trip to Canada.

Yeah, Skyline kinda blows for a few reasons...

1. Extremely expensive 'toll'
2. Super low speed limits
3. Over abundance of police... On a day where it was mostly empty I saw 5 cops in the 30 miles
4. Lots of cars that are sightseeing and obeying the speed limits

It's pretty much just another source of revenue for the 'commonwealth'. Still a few nice sights, good to hit once or twice a year.

Absolutely a good ride. For me, coming from MD...it's a "preview" on my way to the BRP. Sometimes I ride Skyline on my way down, but usually I take 15 to 29 to Charlottesville, hope on 64 for a quick stint west to the BRP, and head south.

Couple years ago I headed out on the CR to do "some miles" on the BRP. Then, around 4pm, I glanced at the road signs and saw Roanoke.

And I had to be at work at 8am. Whoops, hehe...

We rode from the Southern most part of BRP to Front Royal. The state campgrounds don't have showers. At Big Meadows Lodge, on the Skyline, they have a campground with pay showers. After three days it was the best two bucks I ever spent!! If anyone is going to ride the whole thing I recommend you start in Front Royal and go south. The Skyline will warm you up for the twistier roads to the south. Going north made the Skyline seem boring! Still a beautiful area though!

Nice photos and looks like it was an enjoyable ride. I'm not fond of National Parks though: something really irritating about paying to see public lands.

I have lived in central NC for 27 years and have trolled the BRP from end to end on bicycles and motorcycles, although not all in one fell swoop. The southern end is much more spectacular IMHO with the more rugged terrain. I rode my 600 Hurricane across the Linn Cove viaduct the weekend it opened back in 86 or 87...I want half of my ashes scattered there when I die. The other half are going on the bottom of the ocean somewhere interesting.
