the bike stopped charging, that was the only real clue that something was wrong that needed more than an adjustment. just thought i'd post this up here in case anybody else was having strange things happening

Yup. I replaced that needle bearing on my first '06 after it started making noise. Mine was corroded because of moisture due to short winter commutes.

My 2008 started to rumble when it was still covered under warranty. They told me the tranny juice looked like chocolate milk and accused me of crossing rivers.
I was riding in the rain. I had to add a cable tie to the top of the clutch cable boot.
That pretty much stopped water getting in.
Now I just have the condensation thing going.

I went through two clutch hub bearings on my '08 XT. The first one was repaired under warranty. The second, I did the job myself. I discovered that water was making its way into the primary via the cable adjuster. I (like Nate) put a zip tie on the top of the bellows covering the adjuster, and I also covered the adjuster with grease. That cured the cause, and I had no further issues. It's not a good idea to put the cable adjuster right where it will receive maximum exposure to water spray off the front wheel.

i found an entire clutch basket and stator on the bay for a little less than what the stator usually cost. got lucky on that one. most of my trouble started a few days after a solid week of rain, hard rain. it dried up for a few days so i decided to drain the primary. looked like yoohoo coming out. flushed it a couple times and and it straitened out for awhile. a few weeks later it died on me on the road. no more charging.

I was lucky.... the bastard needle bearing failed and the clutch wouldn't disengage....so I was able to get home with no clutch. Stator is still okay after another 5thousand.

I reckon my problem was water in the primary, and too little use

I was lucky too as I noticed the rumble early on and it's didn't kill anything else.

I'm needing to fix this for a second time now. First occurrence was last April due to my neglect in changing the fluids in a timely manner.

I took care to seal the clutch cable entry point and secure the cable adjuster boot to the cable. I checked the fluid a few times in the first month and all looked good.

Was out for a ride on New Year's and heard the familiar growl. Damn. Fluid looked a bit milky but not too bad.

I live in Norcal and despite commuting on this bike all year, it rarely rains so I really can't see how this occurred. I was thinking condensation but it's hard to imagine given that I ride 30mi each day and the motor gets nicely warmed up each time.

Found the bearing and the race and will do it again, but am pretty bummed at having this happen again.

Considering switching to sportster setup (with no shock bearings or thrust washer) if this fails again.

Oh well. I still love the bike. I just hope it lasts!
