Looks like I need to replace the 02 sensor on my 09 Uly. Is there any special tricks to doing this? It looks pretty well buried in there.

I just replaced mine in Dec. If you have the comfort kit you're going to have to remove a lot of bits and pieces.

The manual is a big help but you're still in for some serious frustration.

I bought my 02 sensor and wrench from Advance Auto. It's standard Bosch, some googling will turn up the correct part number.

Buellmeister57, I'm just curious, why do you need to replace your 02 sensor? What symptoms were you having? Did you debug with TunerPro? Thank you!

If it's anything like a normal xb, then it's not that big of a deal. I just bought a 9 (yeah, it's not a uly, I know) back in August last year, never worked on one prior to that. I had the exhaust completely off within an hour or so. There's only 4 bolts holding the subframe on, then lay it off to the side on a chair/stand, support the bike (pit stands and jack under the motor) to remove the top shock mount bolt. Swing the shock out of the way, unbolt the fan, sensor is right there waiting to be removed. Obviously there's a little more to this, such as take off the airbox to get access to the wires, take out the battery and some other little details, but it was not hard at all.

Bosch=12014 has the correct connector from any auto parts store. fits small block chevy engine. costs between $20 - $25.

MOTORBIKE

The CEL light started coming on and the bike has been running poorly. I jumped the data plug and got a code 13. The bike ran nearly perfect the first 14,000 miles then went downhill. I've installed an EBR ecm, K&N air filter, iridium spark plugs, intake air sensor, idle air control valve and it still doesn't run right.

I heard that the good life of the sensor is around 12 to 15 thousand miles. I did not know this and replaced mine when it would not adjust to altitude differences here in Colorado. Made a huge difference an how the bike runs now. I think they go bad slowly and you do not notice the drop in the engines performance and ride ability. I think the Bosch is a better quality sensor cause my bikes runs the best it ever has at 35,000 miles.

I replaced mine while chasing an issue w/stumbling and poor performance after the engine has been run for about 30 minutes. It didn't solve my issue but with 67k on the clock, it was probably time.

Buellmeister57, thanks for the reply!

Jcbikes, how did you cross reference a Bosch O2 to a H-D O2 sensor? I'm pretty sure that if I walked into any parts house around here and asked for anything to cross-reference with a Buell part, they would just get that blank stare on their face. Thanks!

Buellmeister, have you looked at what your AFR is running at, have had several 08 and 09 bikes with EBR ecm come in with poor running and the AFV was down to the mid 80's. Still trying to figure out the cause but compared to the stock ecm---- which was going opposite way to 111, the cold start enrichment is way up compared to stocker( at 180C stock see 100% or no extra fuel and the EBR was still at 103.1% so was adding 3.1% fuel still, did not check number at 140 for EBR but stocker only at 102% at 140C) and it seems learned fuel comes on at about 140C so that maybe some of the cause.

Err sort of yes and no. The engine running/normal set point is 220C and the number to take ALL readings from. The O2 sensor reads from about 100C but also works with air and engine temps at that time.

The AFV works from its set point at something like 85 to 115. The AFV is a nothing to worry on and only changes the fuel ratio of the base fuel map given the conditions at the time.

The base line of this is that the normal running temp of the engine is around 220C. At 140C the ECM still thinks the engine is cold and will add fuel. The other is that even the 10 bike takes a long time to "re-fuel" given conditions.

The trick is as always are the numbers. Use something like tunerpro otherwise your just guessing.

My problem was the AFV would adjust down to the low 80's when I went up into the mountains here in Colorado, but would not re-adjust when I came back down to lower altitudes. Engine would hardly run.

I got this reference list from badweb years ago.

02 sensor for buell from GM delco
GM part #25162693,
and that crosses to an AC-Delco AFS20.

i tracked down all the cross ref sensors;

Bosch= 12014 has the correct connector *****use this one.

GM OEM= 8990469 superseded to 25162693

NTK= 21002

Airtex= 553071

Denso= 234-1001

Walker= 250-21001

SNG= SN1-15

Thanks! That is some good info and I'll bet all of those are way less expensive than the H-D Buell brand too.

FIREMANJIM

Unfortunately I don't have a way to check the AFR. The bike starts and runs well until it gets to operating temp then the idle gets erratic and it sounds like it's "spitting back" thru the intake and the CEL comes on. Lean? Under full throttle it runs very strong. What baffles me is how well the bike ran the first 15,000 miles. I bought it new and installed a Hawk Performance muffler and the only issue was popping on decel. After it started running badly and stalling I installed a K&N air filter, EBR ecm, Iridium plugs, IAC valve, IAT sensor with little improvement. My next step is 02 sensor and throttle position sensor. I traded in a 99 Cyclone with 45,000 miles and the only problems were gaskets, isolators and a belt. I really like my Uly but it's starting to frustrate me.

You can not "check" the AFV as it changes due to conditions. The O2 sensor sees the O2 in the exhaust output and changes the fueling based on the base/fixed fuel map. You are looking at the problem from the wrong end of the deal?

I have had, on my 06 and 10 bikes, many electrical faults including a bad O2 sensor. The ONLY real way is to run a log using something like Tunerpro. Anything else is just guess work and/or hope for the best.
