Hello all : Just joined today (jan 12 2013) and have just recently bought a 2009 xb12x with 3500km's on it. The dealer is a 3hr one way drive from here and is storing the bike untill april. I have seen it, sat on it, heard it run and took some pics. No test ride done but the bike looks excellent,so i went with my gut instinct and bought it.
I have been scouring forums and blogs ever since just to get a handle on what i will be looking (or not looking forward to). My question to you folks today is what maintenance parts should i stock up before they are gone?
My own list so far is - Drive belt, rear and front wheel brgs, k&n air filter, couple of oil filters and muffler clamps? What would you guys( and gals) carry with you on long trips as far as tools and parts?
I am also adding Palmer windshield brackets and handle bar weights. I believe that the previous owner has installed a comfort kit but not sure if the ECM has been flashed. When i get the bike in the spring is there a way to tell by the way the bike runs if it has been?
The dealer had changed the oil already but am thinking of going to Ams oil synthetic 20/50w. I will also be running Lukas injector cleaner/top end oil in this bike. Any coments on that? i have been using it in my 08 Heritage softail for 2 years now and seems to be ok.
I have a bunch more questions but this will be enough for now. Thanks in advance for any replies. GWN

Hey GWN, welcome aboard!

I bought a 2009 XB12X a year ago last October. Mine had 2300 miles on the ODO. I rode it and love it. Unfortunately I had a nasty get-off last April so spent most of last summer replacing a lot of broken parts on the motorcycle. My point is that sourcing parts for the XB bikes doesn't seem to be a problem.

If you haven't already looked at it, there is a link for new owners at the top of the header page for "Big, Bad & Dirty" (this section of BadWeb.) It may answer some of your questions or raise some you haven't thought of.

I haven't toured on the Uly yet. Some here recommend a spare belt. I usually have a siphon hose, 10mm wrench for battery terminals, a quarter drive socket set, a set of gapped spark plugs, duct tape, a handful of plastic wire ties, vice grips, adjustable wrench, a fold up set of alan wrenches and a fold up set of bristol wrenches. I also have a quart of oil, and with the Uly, a funnel is probably necessary. You will also need a 7/8" wrench if you need to take the rear wheel off. These tools are in addition to the minimal tool kit that is under the seat of the Uly.

Does your Uly have the luggage?

Other smarter folks will answer your hard questions.

Barry

Welcome to the asylum! One thing many of us do, as Barry mentioned, is carry a spare belt. However what we recommend is that you get a new belt and put it on your bike now. They are really tight when new and there is no adjustment on a Uly. They will stretch slightly with use so we take the old belt and keep it as our spare, pre-stretched, belt that will a lot easier to put on when you're on the side of the road, alone, in the rain...

If you plan to do much off pavement riding, Barkbuster hand guards are nice. I believe there are cheaper hand guards, but the Barkbusters are nice. They ,also reduce vibration by making a solid loop to the bar end (barkbuster has a bar end weight available but I don't have it,and don't think other bar end weights will work with them) The stock handguards are more of a wind deflector, without much strength.

Thanks for the good advice so far people.I'll put a siphon hose in my kit for sure, along with a plastic collapsable container of some sort. As far as wrenches i should ask a dumb question. I know the bike is USA built but is the bike 100% imperial bolts or are there a few metric ones thrown in for fun?
I think i'll wait on changeing out the drive belt for now as the original has only 3500km on it. I'll keep the Barkbusters in mind but may not fit onto my Palmer wieghts.
Good call on the duct tape. I got into the habit of carrying tape on some thin nylon rope in my suitcase when i fly. I never transfered that idea over to my bike trips. Thanks for the reminder Barry.... Red Green would of been proud. GWN

Hey GWN...

A couple of tools I forgot...I have a Leatherman and one of those screwdrivers with interchangeable tips. Also, not sure why I called them Bristol wrenches, it is a fold up set of Torx drivers.

I've toured a fair amount of miles on my 2001 Buell S3T, looking forward to some trips on the Uly.
