I know the answer to this and it is probably a stupid question but.... Do I really have to get the Uly wheels for the Uly? Really want to order black ones from American Sport Bike but I am ordering wheels because I bent my rear wheel (loaded up over rail road tracks) so I figure I need every bit of strength possible. Checked with a local powdercoater and I'd be looking at $250-$300 to make them black and after the 900 for the wheels and parts that isn't going to happen. TIA | ||

You don't have to, but if you bent the already reinforced ones, I couldn't recommend using anything but real Uly wheels. You can use any XB wheel, but the non-Uly ones are not as strong. This would be a good time to update your rear wheel assembly to the 2010 style with three bearings. I also suggest you check around, that price for the powdercoating is very high. If you want to keep riding it like a Ulysses, keep Ulysses wheels IMHO. Phil | ||

Here in spain i payed under 100$ for having them painted, sure it was not powder coat, but it holds good and if i get a chip just put black nail varnish and it would be hard to se where the chip was. | ||

I'm pretty sure the 2010 rear well for the Uly also comes in black. Its what I have mounted on mine.... | ||

I think the black ones are the non-reinforced type that came standard on the XT. The magnesium color wheels are the reinforced wheels that were standard equipment on the X. If you bent the X wheel, I'm quite certain that you don't want an XT wheel... | ||

It was definitely a freak occurrence that caused the X wheel to bend. Was two up, full luggage, plus a couple more bags. Drove over a railroad crossing in timbucktoo Maine way faster than I should have. Other than that I'm pretty much a straight up road rider. | ||

The original powder coating on these wheels makes an excellent base for paint. If properly prepared and using the good quality urethane, the paint will be as strong, chip resistant, chemical resistant and overall as durable as the powder coating. I highly recommend it. It should cost about half what powder coating does. I color matched my gray rims to Barricade Orange with a single stage urethane about five years ago. I believe if I put a coat of automotive wax on them they would look as they did when new. I just wash the wheels when I do the bike about four times a year with dish soap.  | ||

Since we are on the subject of wheel paint, does anyone have a recommendation for touching up the black powder coat on my XT wheels? I kinda scraped the edges of 3 or 4 spokes when I was removing the front wheel to work on the brake issue I was having. I guess from now on I will cover the edge of the spokes with duct tape when removing the wheel. It seems like I ding something every time I do this. Is there a better way? | ||

Powder coating is a "sort of" plastic paint and a single finish. You can not "touch it up" with powder finish as the coating is a melted on coat. Just use a paint of the same finish to touch it up. Buell used to do "touch up pots" for this but cost a lot. | ||

I really didn't scrape the coating off to the aluminum, just scuffed it up in a few spots. After I get my new EBR brake disk, mounting kit and EBC HH Pads installed, I will try a little satin black paint and a small brush. Thanks. | ||

Wow, that is a great deal! I have brand new (< 3k miles) bearings and spacer in the front rim. BUT, I also have a small nick in it from where my bicycle pedal hit when my bike fell on the motor bike in the back of a trailer. I'll see if I can't find a pic of it. | ||
