09X with just over 50k on the clock. These went probably over 40k, as they were changed as a preventative measure shortly after I got the bike new. Of note, the rust was not there when the bearing seal fell out, but appeared after the wheel sat in the trunk of my car for two days, awaiting transport to the dealer.  | ||

Also interesting, I had no idea they were on their way out prior to the day they blew. The seal actually stayed in place for a while as I drove 15 miles or so with 'What the frack is that noise???' going through my head. | ||

You won't forget that sound, or the feeling in your feet from the pegs, or the wobble that confirms it all. | ||

The wobble was what made me get the bike off the road. I have been having a noisy clutch issue and assumed for a bit that the plates were doing something terrible. Or that squirrels were fighting inside my hard bags. | ||

40k from any wheel bearings is great (IMHO). I'm sure many will last longer than that, but nobody should be surprised when bearings with that many miles go out. Glad you spotted it so it didn't cut a ride short. | ||

I pack a spare set of bearings and a spare spacer with me on road trips... cheap insurance. | ||

40k? On most bikes of this type you would be lucky to get 20k. But I never have. Any damage to the seal and they will go very fast. Once any moister gets in they will be toast very quickly. You should be checking the bearings every 10k or so as normal maintenance. |
