I was talking to a client of mine that sells both used cars and motorcycles and mentioned that I had a Buell Ulysses that I was going to fix up and sell in the spring. He said - "isn't that a cult bike" ... I think he meant that in a good way.

I told him I thought it was worth about $3,500 to $4,000 and that it needed a new fan, rocker box gasket, new tires, new headlight housing, ECM feed wired frayed, etc.

He offered $2,300 as-is and I took it.

Saved me the trouble of fixing everything.

Oh yeah, it was starting to have trouble shifting from 1st to 2nd and the rear shock needed the preload ratcheted up all the way. Rebuild is about $300, last I checked.

Considering what was wrong with it, I'm happy.

I have a well-worn 1150 GS too, but that needs some work...I need to find something newer.

Any thoughts

Cheers
John

Glad you're happy.

the rear shock needed the preload ratcheted up all the way. Rebuild is about $300, last I checked.

For future reference, all that requires is removing the pre-load adjuster, disconnect the hose from it. Back off completely on the pre-load and take a small screwdriver and push the piston down. Re-fill with fork oil. Reconnect adjuster to hose and reinstall on bike. ~15 minute fix, better than new.

"He said - "isn't that a cult bike." I sometimes think on "an other" spelling on that one with the Uly, LOL.

Quote:"Any thoughts". It depends, as always, on what you want and money. I bought a second Uly for many reasons but the main one was that I could not find another bike that could do what a Uly can for anything close to the same money. I also had, having had one before, a very good idea of what they were about.

My opinion of running a Buell is a bit like running a old bike/car which I do as well. It, for me anyway, goes along the lines of knowing you may have some problems so you need to know your machine. The idea of needing to do this fits in with my "like to fix things" nature and the challenge of making them work right has been a big kick for me. It has, to a point, become something of "battle of wills" with my bikes because I KNOW that they work right. It is not for everyone though.

At the end of the day, or at least I think, it is about what YOU get out of a bike.

Thanks, Buellerxt

The only bike that I've really liked (among those I've ridden in the last few years) has been the Triumph 800 XC...very nice. But don't plan to really off-road/gravel road it.

Maybe I'll try a newer full-sized Tiger, too. I've read lots of good things about the engine.

I've always liked Triumphs - the Thruxton is very nice (beautiful to look at), but doesn't suite my 6'3" frame very well.

Damn it's goot lookin'

.

I'm 5'10" and my Bonneville feels like a mini-bike compared to the Uly. Took some getting used to with the short seat to peg dimension and really cheap suspension. Gets almost identical mileage though and runs happily on 87 octane.

I love the Thruxton, and I love Moto Guzzi V7 Racer even more, a bike I would buy on looks alone which must be what Guzzi counts on and Triumph to a lesser degree. I found them both very disappointing to ride, though. The Thruxton feels like a ZX-14 compared to the V7, and the Uly feels like a cruise missle compared to the Thruxton.

I rented an 800 XC for a few days in Colorado and Utah. I liked it a lot, but I think there are better choices if you don't plan on leaving the pavement. Have a look at the Moto Guzzi Norge or the Triumph Explorer as you suggested. Both very nice bikes. I also like the Tenere a lot.

Thruxton looks awesome, and I have a 2002 Tigger 955i thats been good to me. My size though, limits me from these type bikes like the Thrux, we're about the same Johnboy, and if it bothers you sitting on it, after a 300 mile day, you'll hate it. Max for me on my Tigger is about 150 miles, its just not big enough, but still way bigger than a Thruxton.
