Any thoughts on the benefits or lack thereof of upgrading an 08 Uly to the 2010 ECM and dual 02 configuration?

Header, ECM, Main Harness and 2 new 02s would seem to be the parts needed.

Regards

Have you checked the costs of those parts?
The harness will set you off at least 300$.

PM Badwebber "Coldwind" and ask. He has an XB he built up from parts (~2003 frame, 2009 engine, 2010 electronics). IIRC, he retained the 2009 wiring harness and only had to add the wire for the front O2 sensor. I believe he also kept the 2009 header and just added the bung for the extra O2 sensor to the header.

One issue that he did run into was the fuel pump. The 2010 fuel pump is slightly different from earlier versions and he kept getting a "check engine" light until he changed to a 2010 pump.

It is just my opinion but that would be a NO. Reasons why?

You could spend a hell of a lot of time, money and effort on the bike and gain very few extra BHP. From what I have seen, from others results, its only about 5 to 8 BHP at most and thats with a full aftermarket Titanium race muffler system and with all the needed other bits as well.

The Thunderstorm engine is already in a high state of tune and trying to get more out of it is a problem. It is a case of "lowering returns". In other words, like many things, the cost goes up as the benefit declines.

After many hours looking into the tuning of this bike I have, more or less and knew it anyway, come to this conclusion. The bike should run fine even on a early bike. If you want BIG power and speed you will be better of with a second bike that can do it. You at least will get most of your money back unlike messing with the Buell.

The bike should run great as it is but if you have a problem it is with the bike itself and needs looking at. Mechanical and Electrical issues on anything are NOT Gremlins, Black Magic or just a "thats how a Buell runs" thing. That sort of thinking is just going to cause you pain, time and money.

A good running/setup XB is a real joy to ride and beats "hands down" every road bike I (20 years) have ever had. And at close to half the (used) cost as well. Yes the electrics are a pain but, to me anyway, some things are worth the effort.

Not really looking for maximum power, just seeking the ultimate combination of factory parts for a reliable ride.

Regards and thanks

I would consider the costs as a main wiring harness will set you off around 300$ as a start ecm another 250$ a header close to 300$ plus labor work so if you look at it is a whole lot of money.

Benefits? there i cant help you as I have an 06 and still running great.

I'd forget the extra o2 bung and get an eBr Race ECM set for the factory exhaust on the 08. You did.

Next start shopping for a 2010 3 bearing wheel and axle to put on the rear.

Then at every 10,000 miles replace the belt and save the used ones for spares.

Be OCD about oil and filter changes. I use OEM filters and AmsOil 20w50 synthetic in both holes. Any good 20w50 will work for the swingarm hole, and HD Formula + is great in the tranny hole, but I am picky about that OEM filter.

"just my opinion"

Thanks for all the updates and Input

We have access to a mechanically totaled 2010, where the header and main harness appear to be intact.

WE have 2 2008 - 2009 EBR ECM with different configurations already programmed in them. The 2010 is still available from EBR for $305 plus shipping.

We have the 2010 rear wheel, the new belt, upgrading to the XB9 Primary gearing.

The 2010 Fuel pump is on order as a spare already.

If we keep the bike (wife's health dependent) it will be the last one we build
. If we sell it, it will be a compilation of the best of the best Buell had to offer.

"Go for it." Yes why not. On the other hand your own bike should run well enough anyway. Whats wrong with it?

If you do it, please detail the process and parts! I may never update my 09 Uly but it would still be interesting to learn how it can be done.

Uly_Man

Nothing wrong with the 2008 in the least.

I am a retired NASCAR Engineer and like to make things better.

Thus the possible upgrade to the 2010 specs.

Could sell the 08 and buy a 10, but what fun is that
