I'm a bit OCD in recording my distance and fuel consumption while on trips. I just returned from a trip from S. Ontario to Halifax:



While I love the Uly for its personality, I do miss my old DL650 for the tank range (400km), consistent mileage, and fuel gauge!

With only a fuel light and fluctuating mileage, I tend to be cautious when tripping and fuel up the Uly sooner than I need to.

Do a search here - MSR fuel bottle, and operators tube.

I have a tube mounted behind my license plate (as well as one on each saddlebag), and the MSR bottle fits perfectly and carries 30oz(US) of fuel for me. 30oz isn't a ton...but it's about 17 miles you don't have to push. (the tubes on the bags carry a first aid kit, and tools)

Just thinking...along the lines of those 17 miles that you don't have to push....If you could get the engine to switch to 1 cylinder only (is this an ecm setting?) like it does when it overheats...would you get better mileage? Would it be detrimental to the engine?

Just wondering what your options might be to make it to a gas station in an extreme situation...

I don't think I have ever hit 49 or 50 on my 08xt. My average is around 44. Thanks for posting the detailed info!

Same here with my 08XT. Average 42-44. Might be interesting for me to lose some weight and try again. Don't sit by your computer waiting for that to happen!

I found the same thing. I did 2800 miles in 9 days and I ranged from 38 mpg heading west on I-80 at 80 mph bucking a head wind to 63 mpg heading east on I-70 from Dillon to Limon at 70-80 mph. I stopped in Limon cause I knew I needed gas and put in 1.9 gallons!! So I agree, you never know!

I rode my 2004 XB12S (almost 35,000 miles on it) today in the Colorado Mts. 171 miles and it took 2.3 gallons to fill up. Thats is 74.3 mpg guys. I did three Mt. passes over 11 and 12 thousand feet. Most of the ride was between 60 and 70 mph. I have had the bike from new and NEVER get below 60 mpg. When I ride at higher elevations, I always get more mpg. (fuel injection leans it out I guess). The older fuel injection system is much more fuel efficient. I will never sell my bike!

'06 Uly with '07 air box & ECM flash; 50 mpg is lifetime average with over 27k miles on the clock.

Eventually I'll pull the trigger on an EBR ECM. From all the reports, I'm looking forward to seeing how that improves mileage, among other things : )

@ Ratbuell: Indeed, the MSR fuel bottles hold some intrigue if I ever want have some in reserve -- or maybe a couple of creatively mounted rotopax.

I have an 07 bought new, gets 50-52 mpg. I start looking for gas at 200 miles. Carry two 20 oz MSR fuel bottles in bicycle water bottle holders filled with 93 octane.
Drummer, dyno'd, reflashed ECM, K&M air filter.

Mine's a stock 06, with homemade open inner airbox, K&N, and EBR computer. Stock exhaust.

No mileage change from the EBR computer...but a LOT more fun : )

I get more mileage by dumping the side bags, and running with topcase-only (leaving the side racks mounted, of course).

On my stock 06 with just about 20k on the clock, I rarely go more than 130 miles before the light comes on.... is something wrong here? I can think of maybe one or 2 times I've seen 150 before it switched to the countdown.

I don't really ride that hard, good mix of highway and twisties. I can't imagine a situation where I'd be able to make it to 200 miles.

I love my '06 for it's fuel mileage. It has averaged 50 mpg over it's 59,000 miles thus far. I have seen several times in the mountains keeping it twisted, it will do 55 mpg, and on the Blue Ridge Parkway I actually hit 62 mpg. On the interstate cruising at around 80+ it will drop to around 46 mpg. The worst I have ever seen was 41.7.

I run it over 200 miles before stopping for gas regularly around my home area. My fuel light usually comes on at about 180 miles if I do not have too many cold starts.

My '06 routinely gets low to mid-40s. OK I guess since 70 - 80 mph is the norm whether commuting or just heading out for a ride.

BTW, I don't see how you could possibly expect us to evaluate your fuel economy data objectively without at least including average speed, a vector for wind, altitude, brand of fuel, and what you had for breakfast. Sheesh!

09XT, EBR ecm, stock pipe, K&N filter in stock airbox.

My lifetime average is 48. I'm not particularly easy on the throttle, but I do tend to spend more time at 60mph on back roads than 70+mph on interstate.

For Android users, I highly recommend an app called FuelLog. Less than $2, and it helps me a lot with tracking what driving conditions and fuel types result in the best fuel economy for each of my vehicles.

My Saturn SL1 shows a lifetime average of just over 44mpg : D

Alex and I were both riding Uly's for a day that included a stretch of the BRP. Between that, and "real" gas (not moonshine) that is locally available, we both got much further on a tank before the light went on than normal.

The low speed limit, sweeping turns, and lack of stop signs and lights makes for great economy....

My mileage seems to depend mostly on speed. Commuting on the freeway at a steady 70-75mph I get in the low 40s. In the mountains at 4000-5000 feet I get well over 50mpg. This is on mountain roads at 40-60 mph doing all the things they say not to do for good mileage (accelerating hard out of corners, slowing and speeding up quickly, etc.).

I'm another former DL650 owner. I do miss that large tank and fuel gauge and separate clock. But I do not miss the valve adjustments, lubing the chain, worrying about coolant changes. It's easier for me to fill the tank than all those other things. Mileage was within a few miles a gallon and the Ulysses handles cross winds way-way better than the sail boat DL!

I had a 06 Uly and I would get 55 MPG (UK Gall - 4.25L) on a run with 95 RON BP fuel. I now get 46 MPG on the 2010 bike over the same runs with the same fuel from the same very busy, so no stale fuel, garage. And I always use the same filling/cal method each time. I will do a 55 mph run and see the results.
